Hi guys,
Just have a quick question about the 404 Jeffery...
For the people that own one - or want to own one, would you still be perfectly satisfied with the 400gn projectile at 2150fps?
Or is that old hat these days and would you step it up to 2350fps?
I think that there is something nice...
@Bob Nelson 35Whelen ,
I have absolutely no doubt it will mate. I have personally used the 225gn Woodleigh PP in my .338 at a mild 2750fps on Sambar and that was effective (y)
Russ
@jwp475
You're getting about the same velocity as my .338WM and I feel supremely confident carrying my .338 - so you should too!
It never ceases to amaze me just how efficient the '06 case really is.
I reckon you're all set for almost anything (y)
Russ
Hey guys,
l thought I'd post a pic of my new (to me anyway) .303
Not sure if there's many fans of the old .303 British on here, but it's personally one of my absolute favourite's.
lt's a No.I MK III made in 1942 and is in good condition. The barrel is not in too bad condition and it feeds and...
Thank you for the kind words Bob - but the person with the real knowledge on the .458 is Michael458.
He has helped me in the past and has always answered my questions and had time for me.
There a a slew of people on another forum who goes by the name of Riflecrank, CZ550, AussieGunWriter and...
Wrong, my friend!
We were hunting Fallow and long shots were a real possibility so, I took my beautiful (in my eyes anyway!) Winchester M70 Synthetic Matte .338WM
(shooting the 180gn Woodleigh PP @3100fps)
and
My Lee Enfield sporting rifle in .303 British
(shooting the 180gn Sierra SP at a very...
All this talk of the .458 has inspired me to get my backside into gear and load up some ammo!
Here's some 450gn Hydro's loaded in front of some BM2 (BENCHMARK) powder that I loaded up today. (y)
As mentioned, Woodleigh is planning on reopening which is not just great for .458 owners - it's great for all big game hunters!
As for using the shortest bullets in the .458, at the moment I personally use the 550gn and 450gn Woodleigh Hydro's in my rifle and the 550's have a length of 1.414"...
When talking about .458 velocity, I have corresponded with someone on another forum who has hunted quite a few elephant with the .458 Win Mag.
Some of these elephant were killed with the 500gn Woodleigh solid at 2050fps.
He said this would be the minimum he would use - but he has several dead...
Mate,
Would love to share camp with you and in fact, Chris and I spoke about you quite a bit.
All good things too (y)
You let me know when you're down south next and we'll make it happen.
Russ
Haha! Not dirty at all! I was stoked you got one just to prove my spot wasn't crap! :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
It's always great taking someone out and they bag one... awesome.
I didn't go the wrong way on purpose - the stupid compass on my phone was determined to get me lost by consistently...
Hi Nhoro,
People who know me on here know I have a real soft spot for the .458 and I have actually owned 5 of them over the years.
Like you said, ln that time I have worked out some good loads for it.
I've told this story before but when I obtained my first .458 a CZ550 with the hogsback...
@CBH Australia
It was great catching up with you Chris and I was stoked that you got a deer!
Top bloke and someone I'd share a hunting camp with any day (y)
If anyone is ever down Victoria way flick me a message and we'll head out for a hunt.
I know spots for Fallow, Red and Sambar deer and...
Hey guys,
It's been a while since I posted on here due to work commitments so I thought as my first post back in a while, I'd kick it off with a hunt report (y)
The other week saw myself in the bush hunting the elusive Sambar deer.
I had found myself a nice spot overlooking a clearing and...
Hey guys,
I finally got a chance yesterday to chronograph the Woodleigh Hydro's again.
Originally I was after a velocity of around 2200fps so I started with 75gn of BENCHMARK (BM2) and got a velocity of 2318fps.
There was no excessive pressure signs but then out of curiosity I then dropped to...
Thank you Michael
Once again your experience and advice is invaluable and I really appreciate you giving up your time to answer my questions.
Thank you
Thank you Michael - that has just saved me a HEAP of time and effort!
That is almost the EXACT velocity I'm getting in my 458 so the results would be identical... how convenient is that (y)
How did the hydro's stack up to the other projectiles you tested?
Loaded at a chrono'd 2300fps in my...
Hey Bob,
Yeah, I'm thinking of buying a several reams of paper and then soaking them overnight.
I'd use newspaper but I don't buy them anymore!
Yep, I reckon I'll need a bit of media as a 450gn Hydro at 2300fps will probably take a bit of stopping.
I might have to put the test media in front...
Thank you so much for your message - I appreciate it - and if the thread helps one person, it was worth it.
I'll keep publicly posting about load development etc... all with the intent on helping and as soon as I can get out again l will do some more work with the hydro's (y)
Russ
I started out with 75gn of BENCHMARK (BM2) and reached a velocity of over 2300fps.
There were no excessive pressure signs but I was curious so dropped back to 74gn and got the same velocity.
So I've dropped back to 73gn to see what that delivers.
To be honest I was ever only after approx...
Not new to forums mate - and not new to this forum, been around for a while now...
And no, you didn't hurt my feelings.
It can just get incredibly frustrating when time and effort is put into load development and testing and then more time and effort is put into writing it up for people to...
Yeah mate, that’s the reason for the tips - smooth feeding
Apparently without the tips they can be very finicky.
I’m heading out on Wednesday to do some more chronograph work with the .458, and what I’ll do is pry one of the green tips off and see how it feeds in my Zastava.
It feeds like...
I just re-checked the opening post and just like I remembered, the point of it was to show chronograph results for some hand-loads that I worked up for the .458
I posted these results because I thought some people - especially .458WM owners might find them informative or useful.
But as...
Nothing magical about the powders in Australia - and in fact the best powders for the .458WM such as AA2230 aren't even available in Australia...
So there's that...
Yep he messed the shot up and in earlier versions he never blamed the .458 - just his poor shooting. In fact it was his .458 in the hands of his PH that finally killed the animal after several shots from it and his PH's .375 failed to.
Lott's story only started to change when he was pushing the...
I think it is a great rifle for deer hunting - and more often than not when I'm hunting big Sambar deer, I have my .458 with me (y)
My rifle is a Zastava too and I love it.
I have used factory 500gn Winchester Powerpoint ammom @ 2015fps as well as my 480gn Woodleigh Weldcore handloads at...
Hey guys,
This is for all you .458 Win Mag fans out there!
The last few days I've finally got around to doing something I've wanted to do in the .458 for a long time... load up some Woodleigh Hydro's.
I contacted NT Firearms Gove and got hold of some Hydro's in 450gn.
Here's what they look...
I am biased against detachable magazines ever since I hunted with a mate - who when we got to our hunting spot, looked down only to see his magazine was gone.
It had fallen out while we were walking and then he had an awkward single shot...
Russ
Have had a few in the past when they were cheap and easy to get as I dearly love the old .303... Would really love to own a nice .303 now as it's on my bucket list to harvest a deer with one - but in my neck of the woods the prices for a nice one have soared!
Russ
On my ballistic calculator I worked out recoil with that load in that rifle to be 58.92ft/lbs recoil.
That's .458WM territory.
Mate, hang on to it when you shoot it!
Russ
