I agree @Red Leg, that Biden’s blunder factored into Putin’s decision to invade. How could it not? In a twisted way, I think a quick Russian victory (limited in scale as Biden intimated or a complete rout) would have benefited Biden too. If Russia had destroyed Ukraine’s military and...

    Alec Baldwin Movie Set Accident

The armorer failed to do her job….by not ensuring that there were no live cartridges on the set. The producer (who was sadly the shooter…Baldwin) failed to do his job in hiring an incompetent armorer and not ensuring safety controls were in place. To me, these were just people who didn’t do...

Model 70 Which Era is Best?

I’m an outlier I suppose. I’ve owned a number of Model 70s over the years, including all of the eras or generations mentioned. Pre 64, post 64 push feed, the later CRF guns made in New Haven, and the latest ones manufactured in Belgium and assembled in Portugal. IMO the pre 64s have the...

    Carrying ammo to Africa

Some airlines and governments require ammo to be in a separate locked case. Others don’t. However, I’ve never heard of an airline or government that forbid doing so. So the easiest way to go is to go the separate locked case route.

    Toughest Scope: Trijicon? Leopold? Others?

Leupolds have earned a good reputation as durable, reliable scopes. So have Trijicons. Which is more durable? That’s impossible to say. But both are good scopes. Most all quality scopes are now as durable as needed under hunting conditions. Holding zero is paramount, and I’ve never heard...

Please forgive my ignorance - Is there such a thing as a high fence croc hunt?

I’ve seen the show you’re talking about. I thought the very same thing, and in fact, turned the damn thing off! Yes, there are captive crocodiles on offer in a number of places, mostly in South Africa. Where there is a dollar to be made, such hunts will be offered somewhere. I’m not a free range...

Model 70-super express vs safari express?

A bit hard to tell from the pictures. The Custom Express models I’ve seen have the cheek piece, but not the drop box magazine. Here’s a few pictures of mine.

Model 70-super express vs safari express?

Another log to add to this fire. A number of year ago, I bought a Model 70 Custom Express in 375 H&H. It was an old stock, new-in-box rifle made in New Haven in the early 90s. Nicer wood, but I don’t think it’s AAA grade. Polished blued barrel , matte receiver, engine turned bolt. It had a...

Totally your call as the client. I hunt on Sunday’s at home and abroad. I consider myself a fairly observant Catholic, but I don’t think missing mass occasionally hurts the soul, especially when enjoying God‘s creation.

Are the new Hornady cartridges necessary?

As @SaintPanzer said, there hasn’t been a “necessary” cartridge developed in many, many years. For safari hunting, the last innovation needed was an alternative to the various nitro calibers that were no longer being loaded by Kynoch. In North America, soon after smokeless powder was...

Everything about this balloon incident is puzzling. First off, balloon surveillance reached its peak before the advent of effective fixed wing aircraft! Rain Outlook - Namibia

The next “year or two?” That’s a tough one! I had dinner with an outfitter from the Omaruru area of Namibia right after the DSC show. Omaruru is northwest of WDH. He says they’ve had good rains the last 2 seasons and the forecast this year looked promising. I do think the rainfall has been...

    Thoughts on type of camps

Great story! There are good lessons to be learned in the Bush. I noticed the same thing in Zim….trackers, driver and scout would eat by themselves. I asked the PH why we didn’t all eat together. I didn’t feel comfortable with a caste system. He politely explained that they ate by themselves...

    Thoughts on type of camps

I’m late to this thread, and I’ve enjoyed reading everyone’s responses. The ambiance of a camp is a big part of the whole safari experience. I’ve stayed in grass huts, mudcovered cinder block huts and 3 to 4 star lodges. I’ve enjoyed all of them and I’m sure I’d enjoy tents, corrugated tin...

    Qatar Doha Airport

I was in the Dubai airport lounge during Ramadan and they had food and non-alcoholic drinks. No booze, which isn’t that big a deal in a 9 hour layover. I’m surprised to hear that the Doha airport enforced fasting.

    Qatar Doha Airport

I flew that same route a few years ago and got a hotel room for the 9 hours. The Business Class lounge is huge and very nice. Most people could find a place to rack out and be fine. Big comfortable chairs and lay flat loungers are available. How busy the lounge is might be a big factor due to...

    Alec Baldwin Movie Set Accident

I’m astounded that they filed manslaughter charges! I would have bet money that the DA would determine there is insufficient evidence. A win for the cause of justice. I don’t see them dropping the charges, so now it will be decided by a jury. I’m interested in seeing how this plays out.

Hi Kevin. This isn’t hunting related but I was pretty pleased with sourcing a car part for my son‘s Toyota. He lives in an apartment in a nice part of town. One night a month ago, one of our enterprising young citizens drilled a hole in his gas tank to get $20 worth of fuel. Doing so, they...
