35 Whelen - Best Option for Eland Huntress?

The Whelen will be great if you want to buy a new gun. One option would be to buy a stock for your 300HH that fits your wife perfectly.

    My current progress (Bossie Mostert)

Funny how everything has a way of working out sometimes. If that buff hadn't hit you, you might not have known about your heart problem until it was too late! Still a scary, painful, and expensive way of finding out. Anyhow, as you well know, things could've been a lot worse. Godspeed on...

CZ 550 9.3x62 second recoil lug?

So I had a specific conversation about this with the owner of Triple River Gunsmithing. MY 550 in 9.3 came from the factory with the Kevlar B&C stock and NO barrel mounted recoil lug. Apparently they aren’t necessary on a 9.3. So if I want to get that factory walnut stock, I’ll have to go...

Anyone ever used 375 H&H in PPU on game?

Yes. I really think the flat base, round nose design of the bullet aided terminal performance.

Anyone ever used 375 H&H in PPU on game?

I killed a cotton mouth snake with a 300 grain PPU soft point from a push feed Model 70 375HH. True story.

    .458 win Mag hunting/guiding stories

I wasn't going to post as the OP asked for real experience, but as there's been other discussion, I feel bolder to comment. The history of the 458 Win Mag has fascinated me for some time. I have a fun conspiracy theory about the original production runs of the factory ammo that Winchester...

375 H&H/9.3x62 Buffalo and Plains Game Combo

Yes. But do what you like. To me, a 416 pairs better with a 9.3, while the 375 is a “one gun” solution. The 416, if shot well, will be a little better for buff. Any of those chamberings will get the job done, especially with Barnes bullets. Sakos are great rifles.

No need for more than 150 gr in 30 cal

For Buff, sure a heavy bullet, especially in a 30 cal.
  16. Jeffrey

No need for more than 150 gr in 30 cal

I’ve been thinking about this lately. With these monometals, it seems going lighter doesn’t hurt anything. I’m really interested in running a 180gr Barnes out of a 35 Whelen or 358 Winchester. I might buy some 130gn to experiment with in my 308.

    Best work rifle option?

    Made the right choice
  18. Jeffrey

    Best work rifle option?

I’m not a fan of short (308) chamberings in long actions. I also dislike Remy 700s and their clones for anything but range work. So I wouldn’t get the Remy.
  19. Jeffrey

    Best work rifle option?

Of the two, I’d go with the zastava, but neither would be what I’d recommend. For a great 308, look at the Steyr Scout. For more traditional lines, go with a Winchester Featherweight or Winchester All Weather Stainless.

    Starting Out

Procure thyself a Lee Factory Crimp die: they don't hurt anything. Crimping is controversial. A Lee Factory Crimp die doesn't really over crimp. Its cheap, get one. Ditto a neck sizer die. I have one for every bolt action chambering I own. In the grand scheme of things they're cheap so why...

  24. Jeffrey

    Starting Out

1 - On a single stage press, you'll come to find that sorting the brass by headstamp is not going to slow you down much. For a high powered rifle like a 270, just do it. It won't be as important for pistol loads or high volume 223 loads. See how well your powder thrower "throws." Measure 20...

Large objective scopes on large calibre rifles

Higher end European glass (Swaro, S&B, Leica, etc) tends to absorb more light and have better coatings. Illuminated reticles help with low light as well. Try both of those before a huge objective scope on a big bore. IMHO, any objective much bigger than 42-44mm is for predators, varmits, and...

    .270 vs .270 WSM

I always THOUGHT that the highest and best use for the 270WSM is in an ultralight sheep type rifle. You get the same performance as 270Win, but in a short action that's a few extra ounces less. For the gram weenies that count their kits by the grams or ounces. BUT I just checked Kimber's...

    Cartridge belt features

I have a Murray C-2 leather for my 9.3X62. It holds 30-06 and 270 just fine as well. I assume the ones for 375HH fit a 458 Lott or 404 Jeffery as well - that is, I don't really notice any significant tapering toward the bullet end of the cartridge "loop." Although not nearly as refined as the...

    CZ550 Production ceasing?

The 550 Medium has been discontinued for a few years and replaced by the push feed 557. That was in the following chamberings: .243, .308, 6.5X55, .270, 30-06, and 9.3X62. The 550 Magnum (375 and up) length action is still in production. As far as I know, Triple River Gunsmiths (the official...

    Rifle Scope Combination Problem

If it works on 4X, I'd say you're good. 4X will probably be all you'll need for buff anyhow (shouldn't be shooting past 1o0 yards on buff). You DON'T want to be cranked up to 6X and then be charged by a wounded buff. You'll still have that 6X for slow fire on further out PG. Don't mount a...
