    Cool skulls around the place

I hadn't really seen a lot else on the drive that looked promising. Plus, it was hot, I had just done a red-eye in the mini-bus, and I was pretty tired. So I decided I would wait. The house was on a river; I watched birds and hippos all afternoon. Cool skulls around the place.

    African Memories -- Non-hunting African Trip Report -- 1996

Part 7: Zambezi and home Back in VF after my Hwange tour, I headed back to Shearwater. I think the guy was shocked to see me back. He probably anticipated that he had gotten rid of me, but I am not put off so easily; I re-iterated my request...Do they have a spot on a trip and a boat I can...

    African Memories -- Non-hunting African Trip Report -- 1996

Part 6: Hwange National Park Up until now, I had seen wildlife here and there and was pretty excited about it. However, nothing I had seen compared to the diversity and quantity of animals in Hwange! My cook was great and kept me well fed. Driver was good as well. Of course, I had no basis...

Part 5: Victoria Falls Still had plenty of time before dinner, so walked around VF National Park for a while. Gorgeous area. I had planned to have dinner at the Victoria Falls Hotel buffet, but decided against it due to price. Watched a tradition music and dance exposition and then headed...

    African Memories -- Non-hunting African Trip Report -- 1996

Part 4: Through Botswana and into Zimbabwe In the morning, George dropped me off at Ngoma Bridge and I headed into Botswana on foot. I walked to the transit route through Chobe National Park, about 1km if I recall. Thumb out once again and I was on a crowded ride to Kasane in the back of a...

    African Memories -- Non-hunting African Trip Report -- 1996

Part 3: Caprivi I was on vacation, but George was not. Over the next few days I filled the times when he had to work with wildlife watching, mostly hippos, monkeys, and birds. Tons of birds. One night a bat got into the house and I was able to catch it in a butterfly net. It looked like...

    African Memories -- Non-hunting African Trip Report -- 1996

Part 2: Finding George Flights were uneventful. Seattle to JFK to Jo'Berg. Looking at it now, i had it super easy -- no luggage to worry about getting lost, no rifles to get through customs, etc. Just me and a bag in the overhead bin. I had an overnight layover in Jo'berg, so when I...

    African Memories -- Non-hunting African Trip Report -- 1996

As I prepare to go to Africa for my first hunt this fall, I have been thinking of the last time I was there -- Dec 1996 / Jan 1997. Today I pulled out the old journal and had a read. Interesting memories. Non-hunting, but I hope entertaining. ****** Remember...This was back in the dark ages...

    Rangefinding binoculars

I was recently in the bino market and was talking to the guys at Vortex about these. Was comparing them to their Razor HD's. He said that the Fury has the same glass as the Viper series and is not as good as the Viper HD. He recommended Razors and a separate rangefinder -- and that was from...

    GPS?

Thanks. Now you have me thinking about building a map board in the likeness of the old school crime-mapping / brainstorming boards. Map of country, location of each shot, routes walked, kites from kill sites to phones of each trophy. LOL

Rifle Lessons Learned from the Zimbabwe Professional Hunter Proficiency Exam

How much do you need to factor in that most people don't have money for relatively expensive trips (in US or Africa or elsewhere) until they are later in life. I agree that there is a decline in hunting in general, but I would typically expect the over-40 crowd to be the core of the African...

    GPS?

Thanks guys. I think it will go. It's not any additional investment...just requires me to stick a 4-6oz item in my pocket and occasionally remember to mark a spot. Maybe I can include some mapping in my hunt reports. :) LOL

    GPS?

I should probably have clarified.... I'm not really thinking there is a navigational or other need here. Yes, there are scenarios where it could be used, but pretty unlikely ones. Use case... a very small gps thrown in the pocket to track where you have been and mark a few waypoints. Probably...

    GPS?

I will admit up front to being a map nut. I like to preview where I am going, see where I have been, understand the contours of the land, etc. In preparation for upcoming hunts, I downloaded Garmin's Africa maps and satellite imagery. Enjoying playing with them so far. I doubt that a gps is...

I ready the sticky post on VAT tax refunds, but 1 still have one question (in a couple parts). So potential VAT refund on products exported but not on services.... Clearly the daily rates of a hunt would be services. But are the trophy fees or any part of the hunt considered 'products' and...

Thanks! I built a pair of sticks last week to practice from -- haven't tried them yet as it's been freakin' cold, but hopefully in the next week or two. Even took the most important step and spray painted them camo. I'm figuring shots will be longer as well; decided I'll swap out the 416...

The best way to prepare for first African hunt....

After booking my first african hunt for 2020 in Tanzania, I soon came to realize that I had a lot of preparation to do. Training, guns, ammunition, clothing, shot placement, etc. I decided it would be best to take a stone-cold logical approach to the issue. If I wanted to prepare for a...

Thanks Brickburn. That's good information. The "...and other" phrase is bothersome. Leads me to more questions. (And sorry if this has all been beat to death before...I'm a newbie trying to sort it all out!) It appears that both cheetah and south african leopard are Cites Appendix 1...

Leupold's Illuminated Fine Fire Dot 4 Reticle

Recently was looking at thot one myself. The Vx5-HD 1-5x24 comes in 2 models. One has the open turret and the other doesn't. I wanted one for a DG rifle, so figured I didn't need the turret and it might even be a problem if it got bumped/spun. However, only the turreted model looks to come...

    Reloading especially for African temperatures?

This is a relatively recent article that I found interesting. It doesn't compare all powders, but definitely seems to give the nod to the Hodgdon extremes as the least temp sensitive. I doubt you will blow up your rifle with any modern powder, but if you are loading to try to maintain...

Experience with different brass? Best longevity?

Want to start reloading for my 416 rem and 375 H&H. Brass prices vary widely. Most available seem to be Hornady, Nosler (at least for the 375), and Norma; the Nosler and Norma are around twice the price. In small bores I typically use Lapua if I can, but I don't think the consistency quite as...

    Second rifle options

That's interesting. Very good to know. i still need to work up loads for these rifles. I was planning to use a-frames for the softs, though there is also some appeal to a light load with the Barnes 250. Hadn't decided on sold yet, but was thinking of going with Barnes there too. Barnes and...

    Best rifle for women

Caliber makes a difference (obviously) but it is very much in the context of rifle weight and fit. Get one that fits you well. Get one that is comfortable carry but please don't go buy a 300wm 'sheep rifle' model because it's nice and light. An ultralight rifle can hurt, even in 7mm-08! I...

Warning heeded! The 416 has a 1-6x on it and the 375 is a 2-12. And I promise to be good about keeping things on low power too -- ok, I do that anyway. I picked up 8x binos so I could leave my 10x at home; I will say many kind words to my spotting scope before I leave to make sure she knows...
