Attacked by dangerous game while hunting something else?

Never had anything really hairy happen while hunting overseas. We did get charged in Zimbabwe by a foul-tempered cow elephant. We were in the Toyota, driving slowly on a sandy track, looking for buffalo. The driver (PH) put it in reverse and the chase was on. After what seemed a long way and a...

    Buffalo bull or cow?

Lots of good information in the posts above. I am certainly no expert, having only killed two buffalo bulls (one in Zimbabwe, another in South Africa), and one buffalo cow. The cow hunt was in the greater Kruger area (unfenced) in SA, and there were lions hunting the same herd of buffalo we were...

    South Africa's Best Kept Secret

It's a beauty of a place, and it has good, hard, honest hunting. We were there in late April of this year and got to hunt and sightsee on both of the +24,000-acre properties Ernest mentioned. (This after a hunt for cow buffalo in the Greater Kruger area.) It was a fine safari, and the new camp...

    Buffalo Cow Pictures

Oh yes. Very similar to hunting for a buffalo bull, but a lot less pricey. These two pictures are from April, 2024. The second photo should have a word balloon above it saying, "One of us is fixin' to have a very bad day."

Has anyone hunted buffalo in the "Greater Kruger Area". Experiences and recommendations

Mid-late April. I think May would actually be better.

Has anyone hunted buffalo in the "Greater Kruger Area". Experiences and recommendations

I also hunted with Ernest Dyason of Spear Safaris in the greater Kruger area. I had taken buffalo bulls on previous hunts (in Zimbabwe and SA). This time Ernest secured permits for 2 buffalo cows for my nephew and myself. (Pretty similar hunt to hunting herd bulls, but less expensive.) The camp...

Would you mount a Female Cape Buffalo?

Trophies are for remembering hunts, remembering the excitement, the hardships, the sweat, the smell of the campfire, and the final moment when you know the animal is yours. They are not (or should not be) for impressing your fellow hunters. If it's a good animal that was well hunted, and if it...

    .375 h&h for whitetails

I've killed two whitetail deer with my .375 H&H. I usually hunt with a .270, but I had recently sighted in my only "African caliber" rifle, found it to be very accurate, and just wanted to try it on deer. Both deer were hit with 300 grain A-Frame bullets from factory loads (Federal or...

    Delta from Atlanta to Joberg

My nephew and I (both of us just over 6' 4" tall) just got back from a trip flying Delta Premium Select. OK; 16-plus hours in an airplane (both ways) is not much fun, but it was far more comfortable for us in Premium Select than it would have been in coach. I've flown coach. 'Nuff said. All...

    Best balls

The post and replies remind me of a good friend who would eat ANYTHING. Well, almost. He wouldn't eat collards. Now, Ed was a great lover of chitlin's and ordered them whenever he had a chance. I can eat the things, but I'm not a fan. The odor of cooking chitlin's is sort of like the odor one...

SOUTH AFRICA: Two Buffalo Cows And A Wildebeest Charge. Who Gnu?

Great story, Timbo. You are now the 4th or 5th person who has told me about being charged by a wilebeest, so I guess my experience was not as unusual as I had at first thought.

SOUTH AFRICA: Two Buffalo Cows And A Wildebeest Charge. Who Gnu?

Thanks, Para45. The cow I shot (the one on the left) does have a wide spread, but the one my nephew Evan shot really looks like a bull, doesn't it? The PH also remarked on what an unusual boss it had for a cow. Maybe in this modern age of gender choosing, Evan's cow "identified" as a male.

    Show off your 100-year-old guns

"Elsie," my L.C. Smith Ideal Grade. I think she was born in the early-mid 1920s, but I'd have to check her serial numbers again, and she's back at the hunting cabin. Until non-toxic shot was mandated, I used her on primarily on ducks and geese. She also took my nicest whitetail buck. Now she's...
