This is the second big boar that I’ve taken with the 286 Hornady factory load and it did not quickly kill or incapacitate either time.
These appear to be pretty tough bullets and the relatively low velocity does not appear to create a significantly large wound channel. They just sort of drill...
My Steyr SM 12 in 9.3x62 wears a Ziess 3-12x42.
I shot a big wild boar with it yesterday at about 5 yards with a 286 grain Hornady.
I think I’m going to a smaller scope, with 2x or less on the low end.
I think a good 1-6 is probably ideal.
If you not going to be shooting more than 300 yards, the 35 Whelen.
If really long shots are taken, the 300.
If your ammo doesn’t arrive, the 300 will be available somewhere.
Taking a 404 and a 35 means you will probably not be able to hunt with either rifle if your ammo doesn’t show up...
I have had three half moa 25s.
A Stainless Synthetic Remington M700
A Walnut Blue Weatherby Vanguard
A Stainless Synthetic Steyr SBS
All would shoot great with factory ammunition
Sundles is not a smooth talking corporate kind of guy.
But he is a good story teller and a tremendous source of information.
He reminds me of Elmer Keith.
I believe the story, Sundles didn’t spend the money on the expert witness because he was just getting by. I suspect his lawyer knew it was a losing effort.
Large corporations have the funds to appeal cases again and again, as well as repeatedly counter sue their small competitors.
I’m glad...
Lovely work of art. I always wanted a 6.5x68 but never could figure out how to get brass.
It will be a laser beam out to 400 yards. No need for Turrets or range finders. Just point and shoot.
Get a simple round muzzle brake that is close to barrel diameter. The tactical ones aren’t necessary.
Since you are drilling it out to a larger diameter, start with a brake with small holes. You can enlarge them as well. I don’t like brakes that direct blast back toward me. Find one with holes...
If the pad is removable, you can but a mercury recoil reducer, or just plain lead in the butt stock. Together with the brake, a recoil reducer or lead weight can work wonders.
If this all works, my hat is off to you.
Depending upon what the finished gun weighs, you may want to add weight to the butt stock.
My gun weighs 10 pounds loaded with the scope. I would not want it lighter.
I do not have a muzzle brake, and that may make it shootable without extra weight.
I was talking to an Outfitter friend in Utah who is pretty famous for hunting mountain lion as well as leopard with hounds.
We were talking about a future hunt, and he said a Marlin in 35 Remington was the perfect gun for cats with hounds in the West.
I have Marlins in 30-30, 35 Remington, and 44 magnum.
Have used the 35 Remington more than the other two. I like the 200 grain Remington Core Lokt and the 200 grain Hornady FTX bullet.
They are both real killers. My 35 Remington killed a charging 292 pound boar at spitting distance after he...
I have a fine old Savage 99 in 300 Savage, it kills just like a 308 in my experience but I would limit shots to 250 yards with it.
I have also used 44 Magnums a good bit. A Marlin carbine as well as Smith and Ruger revolvers. I have used the 44 for hogs, deer and one bull elk.
The elk was a...
