Based on my experience: 7 mm Rem. Mag. for the first four.
I never hunted the others.

7x64 and 375H&H will have you covered for hunting the world, including elephant. Choosing the proper bullet is the real key.

If you WANT another barrel for dedicated DG hunting, I'd recommend the 416RM, 458WM or 458LOTT depending on your level of recoil tolerance and personal preference is. If you wanted to go with another barrel smaller than the 7mm, the 257WBY or 22-250 would be good choices with decent ammo availability in remote camps.

You guys are no fun, you gotta choose a different caliber for each species. How else are you going justify "all those guns"?

The obscure 9.3x66 Sako! Do you own one?

Yes I do, don't tell my wife. I own all of those calibers other than the 7x57 and the 9.3x74R, but...

Any respectable rifle collection should include a .275 rigby for historical purposes and at least two double rifles. At least that is what I will tell her, or maybe I won't - She'll never know!

Nice! Does it perform better than the other 9.3’s? Just wondering as there is one for sale near me. Can you find ammo for it?
If you can find one buy it, they hard like wedding dick hard to find. I searched for 3-4 years before I found one that was reasonably priced.

Factory ammo is not hard to find, there always seems to be some bouncing around on gunbroker. Mine came with 10 boxes of factory ammo, and I have not worked up hand loads for it yet. The factory ammo gets you just over 4000 ft. lbs, so more energy than the 9.3x62, but less than the 9.3x64.

Roe buck .308 Win or 6.5x55
Red and Fallow deer 7mm Rem Mag,
Wild Boar 30-06
Moose & bear 375 H&H
Sable & Kudu 300 Win Mag
Eland 375H&H
Buffalo 458 Lott

- roe = 243
- fallow = 7mm/08
- red deer = 7 mm mag
- wild boar = 405 Winchester
- moose (Newfie version) = 300 Win mag
- Moose nearby brown bear = 375 H&H
- black bear = 30/30 Winchester
- grizzly = 375 H&H
- sable = 300 Win mag
- kudu = 300 Win mag
- eland = 375 H&H or 9.3/74R
- buffalo = 450/400
- buffalo (American) = 45/120 Sharps

Now that’s a fucking list!

If you place your bullets well, you can start & stop with the .375 H&H. If you want to add another the .275 Rigby will do.

- roe (buck)- .243 Winchester
- fallow (stag)- .275 Rigby (7x57) or 7x57R
- red deer (stag)- .275 Rigby (7x57) or 7x57R. but I shot mine with the guide's 300 Win Mag
- wild boar- 9.3x74R
- moose- Haven't done it, but probably would take either 9.3x62, 9.3x74R, or 450/400
- brown bear- 30-06 or 9.3x62. My guide's 308 worked but wasn't ideal for me.
- black bear- 243 Winchester, .275 Rigby (7x57), or 7x57R.
- grizzly-30-06 or 9.3x62
- sable -.275 Rigby (7x57) or 7x57R
- kudu-.275 Rigby (7x57) or 7x57R
- eland-9.3x62 or 9.3x74R
- buffalo- 450/400

Also, I wouldn't think twice about using my .500 Smith & Wesson Magnum on the buffalo, grizzly/brown bear or moose. I'd actually like to see what a 700-grain hard cast would do on a buff. ☺

yea, but what fun is that? I have a hunt the world .375 H&H, and I have killed many things with it, but sometimes you need something a little bit different

I don't have 12 different calibers (limited southpaw choices invite repetition) but I do have 12 different guns. I would hate to be thought of as "no fun" so I'll give it a try with what I have in the safes right now:

I could cover a lot of territory with the Winchester 70 Safari Express in 375 H&H alone but that's probably a common sentiment. Pairing it with a Ruger No. 1 or one of the 30-06's would be a versatile combo.

Now that I have settled on my Blaser R8 setup with a 7x64 and .375h&h combo with z8i 2,3-18x56 and 1-8x24, respectively, I thought it would be interesting to make a thread of people’s ideal or preferred cartridges for different species as listed below:
- roe (buck)
- fallow (stag)
- red deer (stag)
- wild boar
- moose
- brown bear
- black bear
- grizzly
- sable
- kudu
- eland
- buffalo
The answer is 8x68S.
