Now that I have settled on my Blaser R8 setup with a 7x64 and .375h&h combo with z8i 2,3-18x56 and 1-8x24, respectively, I thought it would be interesting to make a thread of people’s ideal or preferred cartridges for different species as listed below:
- roe (buck)
- fallow (stag)
- red deer (stag)
- wild boar
- moose
- brown bear
- black bear
- grizzly
- sable
- kudu
- eland
- buffalo

My own would probably be 6,5x55 for roebuck, 7x64 for the rest up to wild boar, which I would probably pick 9,3x62 for, and then .375h&h for the rest (without having any experience with any of them other than moose). Will most likely also be the two next barrels I will add for the R8 (6,5x55 and 9,3x62).

404 Jeffery for buffalo.

6.5x55 for black bear and wild boar.

9.3x62 for everything else.

Buffalo- 404Jeffery or 416 Rem Mag
Moose-300 Win Mag
Grizzly-375H&H
Black Bear-35 Whelen
Large African PG-9.3x62 Mauser
Roe and Fallow-270 Win
Red Deer-7PRC
Wild Boar-30-06

Buffalo - 416 rigby
Elk - 300wsm or 30-378wby (Have owned and like both, don’t own either right now)
Deer/antelope/anything smaller than elk - 257 weatherby
Large plains game 416 rigby again, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
Bear 416 rigby
Moose 416 rigby (because moose are usually in bear territory and shots usually aren’t far)
Straight wall state deer 350 legend.

I’m of the belief that I’d prefer to own as few rifles as necessary to not feel under gunned or incapable of making a shot at any game or distance opportunity I might have. I think the 416 rigby, 350 legend, any 300 or 338 magnum, and a 257 weatherby will cover anything I would ever hunt as far as centerfire rifles go.

If I were to add one more to the list it would be something a bit more mild with reach, like a 284 win or 7x57 mauser.

Great post! The 375 H&H will easily take all but my 404J would be my ideal choice for all of them. However, where is the fun in that? I would take my DR in 450 NE for the buffalo and the brown bear. The rest would still be my 404J.

264 WMag x goat and sheep
9.3x74 r for boar and upwards until elephant

I have no idea the shipping cost from here to Costa Rica. I can do my research on shipping and get back with you later today.

I didn't see your request re: ship co’s. My last shipment was 2023. Quotes from SBS Logistics ($1,198), Badger Cargo ($1,184 - used them) & AHG Trophy Shippers ($1,746). AHG owner's an asshole so wouldn't have used him anyway. Eastern Cape - Houston, TX, so your mileage may vary. NEVER use Karl Human Taxidermy aka Wild Africa Taxidermy on Eastern Cape. Trophies arrived shattered with no padding/packing material.
