35 Whelen or 300 Win??

Since the OP has a .300 Win mag he is in a perfect position to use it as a donor and rebarrel to .358 Norma!

Best of both worlds and if he handloads he can load it to max and ALMOST get to Bob’s .35 Whelen velocities :)

Townsend @Bob Nelson 35Whelen gets astronomical velocities out of his .35 Whelen using his own proprietary powders. As a new member, if you stick around here long enough and read EVERYTHING .35 Whelen threads/posts, you’ll see. LOL
I’m already seeing.
Kind of an ongoing gag that everyone goes along with.

HA! He called the 338 the 318's Big Brother! Brian Herne also liked the 338 Win.
I like the 338 and the 338 federal
I really wanted a 338 marlin when it came out but saw hornday was going to back off of it.
But having used a few 338 and different 35
In the same class of cartridge capacity
To me it looks like the 35 cals hit harder.

But that might be because I used lighter bullets in the 338

Silly me, I had no idea Bob made his own powders. I was under the delusion that Bob used ordinary powders, like Hogdon CFE223, but loaded the 35 Whelen to 270 Win pressures, about 62,000 psi, in firearms built to take it. I can't believe I got taken in by the "ongoing gag"

Bob? Any comment? :A Popcorn:

Silly me.

This sounds ridiculously optimistic. It’s got the same powder capacity as a 30-06. Is there some new magic gun powder? If so then the .300 Winchester can do 3,200 with 200 grain bullets and the .338 can get 3100 with the 250.
I apologize if there actually is some incredible development but color me skeptical.

It isn't optimistic mate.
Can be done and done safely with NO EXCESS PRESSURE

It's no gag mate
It's s just good old fashioned shit stirring.
250s out of the Whelen at 2,709fps and 225s at upto 2,950fps
They aren't made up velocities they are actual chronoed velocities
You better hope and pray you don't own a 243 as it is my least favourite cartridge and I hate that useless little pissant of a so called cartridge with a passion.

You aren't silly mate that's the powder I use to get those velocities.
I have board Teflon covered shoulders so the shit people like hanging on me just slides off.
That's what I love about this group, we can stir the pot with each other whilst still respecting each other and have a laughed all whilst learning

When I first read Bobs posts about the .35 Whelen a while back I was very skeptical. My first reply was to state what seemed to be obvious to me, there is no way you can cram enough powder into a 30-06 case to drive those heavy bullets that fast.

I now own three .35 Whelen rifles and have another being built. I have loaded thousands of rounds, tried 11 or 12 different powders and 13 different .358 bullets.

I have not been able to get that 225gr bullet to 2900fps in the .35 Whelen as Bob has, but I do have a 225gr at 2855fps in the Whelen, that is 400fps faster than I can get a bullet that weight to exit the 30-06 barrel. I can get about the same velocity from the 300WM with a 220-225 gr bullet. Move up to the 250gr bullets and I am getting just under 2700fps from the .35 Whelen with Speer Hot Core and Norma Oryx bullets. Almost exactly the same velocity I get from the .338WM with a 250gr Grand Slam. I am a big fan of Hammer bullets. In the .35 Whelen I have a 245gr Hammer bullet at 2815fps and a 215gr Hammer bullet at 2910fps.

There is obviously more invloved in getting a bullet moving than case capacity.

My 280 Remington AI (another 30-06 based cartridge) matches the velocity of my 7mm Rem Mag with exactly the same bullet, the 7mm Mag case holds quite a bit more powder. I have a 338-06AI, maybe my favoite rifle. My 338WM burns a lot more powder than the 338-06, but there is no practical difference in performance with same bullets between the 338-06AI and the .338WM. In most of my loads the 338WM is 50-75fps faster.

The best performing powder in almost all of my .35 Whelen loads in 2000-MR.

Bob's load has a little more muzzle energy than a 400gr 416 bullet at 2200fps. It has less frontal area, so less shock effect on impact than the 416, but much better sectional density and penetration than the 416 with the right bullets. If you can't have a real DG caliber, 35 Whelen (or 9.3x62, also 30-06 case capacity) is the next best thing.

You have a lot to learn grasshopper. You should always know how deep the water is before jumping in with both feet. Welcome to our group.

"Grasshopper, take the pebble from my hand ... "

“Bob, take the .35 Whelen in your hand and load a 225gr Barnes TTSX to the same velocity as the .338 WINCHESTER MAGNUM. When you can’t, it will be time for you to leave and buy a .338 WM”. LOL

As support for what was stated above….PP2000MR really woke up my 20” Whelen also.

I was able to get over 2700 with 250 Speers with no discernible pressure signs.

These days, I have that rifle set up pretty well as a dedicated iron sight rifle. Since I am limiting its range with the sights, rather than red line everything I like using PP2000MR and CFE223 to give nice comfortable working speeds (2500+\~ with 250s and 2600-2650 with 225s) at lower pressures.

Easier on the brass, easier on the gun and easier on my shoulder.

In order to maintain decorum a 7x 64 would be more fitting than a 300 WM.
I don’t have a 7x64, so I will be bringing my 300 Win on my upcoming hunt. It was more accurate at distance than the 35 Whelen with the ammo I have. I am not a hand loader so I am limited to factory offerings.

There is no decent factory ammo for the 35 Whelen. I would take the 300wm over the 35 Whelen if I was limited to factory ammo.

@Deepfork, that’s the plan. I’ll be taking 200 grain Terminal Ascents for my 300 Win.

I have a good supply of 225 grain TBBCs for the 35 Whelen that shot ok out to 200 yards but not as good as the 200 grain Terminal Ascents

An interesting bit of trivia for you:

From 1931 until 1963, James Purdey & Sons only offered magazine rifles in two calibers- The 7x57mm Mauser and the .404 Jeffery.

I read an older thread that mentioned you having some 9.3x64 brass. Do you still have some? I am looking for 100 pcs, maybe 200.
A wonderful trip to Hungary with a very special friend !
