Here is a interesting rifle that a friend has made . Its a custom made458 win mag necked up to a .470 caliber. He calls it the 470 win mag . Im sure there will be a few comments on this one . Recoil is similar to a 458 lott.

Must have been bored that day…

Ive seen the velocity reports, 2300-2350fps 500 grain jacketed. Thats 458 lott power. Id say removing the taper and necking up add a bit more powder capacity than expected and also the 11% larger bore area in 470 over the 458 with the same bullet weight moves it a bit faster as well.

I have seen 458 win mag loads do an honest 2200fps with 500 grain so the math checks out, pressures would be right at the top end.

What a marvellous little cartridge , all that power in standard length action and in a big magazine like a CZ550 you would get 5 down

He makes them for fun a lot of the time. he has done everything from 375 to 600O.K in safari grade, 577 light nitros on Martini henrys, bolt and levers in 50AE, 500alaskan, 500SW and Automax, also owns the only two 577 Rewa and 495-Square reamers I have ever heard of in use( I mean seriously, who has ever done the 495 Square before lol). Tests them on water buffalo and banteng which he has some kind of concession to shoot in big numbers. The guy is a genius and high volume hunter, I'd have to put him in the top few in the world.

Pretty interesting. I always wonder though, by increasing the bullet size we're reducing the velocity with the energy staying roughly the same, typically. Is making a 458 Win Mag into a 470 Win Mag or 500 Win Mag really making an improvement?

One thing I will say, I'm at least grateful to keep things fairly straightforward with this wildcat. The 375HH necked to 458 and necked to 470 seems far less extreme than inventing a goofy case or using rare brass like 404J and trying to neck it up.

Three strikes against me getting it: 1. left hand, 2. Ruger action, 3. 8.5 lb. If it were a Win or CZ, right hand and 10 lbs prior to scope & mounts I'd consider it- after all, I'm looking for a single barrel rifle with a .475" bore to shoot a bunch of hard bullets that I don't want to put through my double rifle. But it is an interesting rifle.

The original post said it was a custom 458 Win Mag necked up to 470 for $4200.

If I was going to try to reproduce something like this, I would buy a left-handed Hawkeye African in 375 Ruger that I've been ignoring for $900 to start with. Then I would wildcat it by upsizing the larger-capacity 416 Ruger as the parent case. Seems like I might be able to get similar or possibly better results at a more affordable price.

As a fun side project, I built my Ruger 77 MkII 458 Win Mag for $1,486. It weighs about the same as the rifle above & I really enjoy shooting it. I don't think I would personally spend that amount of money to get the extra 470 power but I would never want to discourage anyone from building something unique. (y)

@rookhawk got me curious regarding wildcat bullet diameters vs energy. Using QL and QD, sized 458 winmag case from 284 to 474 calibers and charted the results below:

Regarding the OP post:
458 winmag, 480gn shows 2287fps and 5575ft-lbs
470 winmag (.468 caliber), 480gn shows 2307fps and 5671ft-lbs
for the 470 Capstick Short,
470 short (.474 caliber), 500gn shows 2264fps and 5693ft-lbs
458 winmag, 500gn shows 2197fps and 5357ft-lbs

Other than this interesting exercise, I guess this shows, what is already known, that the 458 WinMag
shines better with the 480gn weight and that the 470 Short looks like a nice "short step":)

Cool exercise.

The standout to me was a 470NE load in a win mag case. It would be manageable to shoot at 2150fps and you’d be putting out double rifle performance. The gun should weigh 10.75 pounds to match the recoil pain of a 470NE rather than an absurd punishment.

Steve-
I need some clarification-the 470 WinMag shows .468 while the 470 short is .474. the 468 would be the bore diameter while the .474 would be the groove diameter. shouldn't both cartridges use the same number for the calculation?
