Age minimum to fly with rifles? Also can two passengers share one lockable gun case? And two rifle, same caliber?

Flying with my 19 year old son to RSA this summer. We would both like to take 375's, is he of legal to transport a rifle in the US and RSA? If so, can it be in the same lockable case with mine? Will two guns of the same caliber cause issues?

I’d recommend you ask one of the pre-approved permit services like Africa Sky or Rifle Permits that question directly. Getting a permit pre-approved avoids issues that might occur trying to get issued after landing. Google says the minimum age is 21.

You can take both rifles in one case under your name ... if only two rifles are going. Most airlines will only allow two guns per person (some will take three). That would be the best solution.

The issue is that both rifles are chambered in .375. If both are H&H etc. I would get the opinion of somebody who deals with this on a daily basis.

Yeah, I think that is the problem. Kind of in a bind either way you go. I think the age of 19 is an impediment, as is temporarily importing two rifles of the same chambering (by one person).

I’ve been told at least some pre-approved permits have been issued for 2 rifles of same caliber. If it’s pre-approved you are good. I would not risk landing and trying to have permit issued on the spot though.

No and no. You must be 21 years old and cannot import more than one firearm the same caliber per person or your firearms will be seized. Don’t even try.

I flew to Tambo last year with my 16 year old god son and his dad. They both had 300Wby mag rifles, in the same case. We worked with riflepermits.com and they advised us to make certain that my god son had a separate 4457 for his rifle. We got it, but it was a little bit of a hassle at Tambo because they were both the same caliber. Both rifles were actually owned by my friend, my god son’s dad but all the RSA really looks at is the 4457. We got in, but two rifles of the same caliber in the same case did draw some unwanted attention.

Then I don't really see much of a problem as long as you have two 4457's since SAP's considers the 4457 as a ownership form. The only problem I could see is his age, but there are a lot of 19 year olds and younger hunting South Africa.

@swoobie - I think you’re being Smart & careful to do that - No reason to take any increased chance for something to “go wrong”. Since traveling with firearms can be problematic even when following the established rules and common practices - don’t add any “unusual twists” that could cause stress, uncertainty, or a negative experience for the Young man you’re taking on this trip. I would take a different caliber if it were my trip and my Son.

Good move deciding to take two different chamberings. Put both rifles in your name and it will not be a problem.
