I need to mount a Leupold VX5 2-10x42 (thank you Mark Biggerstaff) on a Win 70 .375 H&H.

The rifle came with Leupold two piece QR bases so I figured I’d take the path of least resistance and order Leupold QR rings.

Using AI to crunch the numbers, the recommendation was for 30mm HIGH rings providing 4-5mm clearance from the barrel. Medium rings at least according to Grok ai provide less than one mm of clearance.

Can anyone confirm that High rings are the correct thing to order? Am I going to be craning my neck?

Is there a smarter solution?

There is no way you need high rings for a 42mm scope.

I would add, the trend in the tac world is to move to taller rings, this is especially true for LPVO and red dots. But for your purpose, not really apples to apples.

Just ask Mark, he hooked me up not only with scope but rings and bases for my model 70. He is the go to guy for scope questions

I just found the pull down menu on Leupold. It calls for medium rings. Don’t trust AI!

I've thought more about this, normally the difference in height of medium to high rings is .1". So if that is true for the Leupold rings, that would at max mean the a difference of 2.5mm.

Update: A Leupold VX-5HD 2-10x42mm doesn’t work at all with medium QR rings on a Win 70 .375 H&H. The objective bell lands directly on the express sight.

So…now I’m thinking of putting that scope on a different rifle and back to the drawing board for the Dangerous game PLUS opportunistic plains game scope.

I don’t want to mount a scope with high rings. Tell me if I should get over it and adapt to that.

Do I save up for a Z8i 1x8x24 (30mm tube)? How are they when you get up to 6-8 magnification?

Or please recommend me something else with a smaller objective size. I have no knowledge of Zeiss offerings.

Just moving to DM. Yes, please ask your friend if he knows somebody who might be willing to support a persistent hunt in the snow.
