This has already been addressed, but... .458 Win Mag as a Dangerous 5 rifle?

I have had a thread similar to this before, but would like to present it again for various reasons. Thoughts on the .458 Win Mag as an Elephant/Cape Buff/Dangerous 5 rifle? Wouldn't mind getting the caliber change kit for a Stevens 200, but dont want to waste my time if im gonna be bouncing bullets of an elephant. Thanks for the help.

I am not a fan of straight walled cases, so will likely never own a .458 Winchester. I did have a Lott, but sold it.

Someone wrote an article on loading the .458 Win with the bullet further out, to obtain Lott case capacity in the Magnum magazine a few years ago. I think they used a CH4D cannelure cutter to create a crimping groove further back on the bullet. They did in fact succeed in achieving.458 Lott velocities. I see no reason that the .458 Winchester, especially when hand loaded will not be adequate for all dangerous game.

Will I ever use it? Likely not, as there are at least 20 big bore cartridges I like more. If I have to use a camp rifle in .458 Win, and the ammunition is adequate I will have no trouble doing it.

13 .458 African- PITA to load, but an effective cartridge
14. 460 G&A. Always thought it was a very underrated cartridge
15 .450 Dakota - again cases are a PITA, but its a great cartridge
16 .450 Rigby - a Dakota with less hassles finding brass
17 .470 NE - if Lon doesn’t cooperate
18 .500 Jeffery

20. .505 Gibbs - I’ve always loved that massive case.

There are probably others, but larger than .500 is a waist in my honest opinion as they under penetrate for how much they recoil.

I like your list . Some great cartridges listed. I wouldn’t be down on the 500s they are impressive and not that bad to shoot . 500 NE with 570gr pill at 2150fps in 11 lb rifle is awesome . 505 Gibbs with 600gr pill at 2150fps equally awesome but also needs 11lb rifle. Have not hunted with 500J but with a 600gr bullet will be same as the other two .

Once again, that ever popular .465 HOLLAND and HOLLAND has been left off another list. LOL

Anyone that doesn't feel safe and feels the .458 Win isn't enough for dangerous game, I'll be happy to take one for the team, keep you safe, take it off your hands for free and bare the cost of disposal. Think about the children.

I've always loved the .505 Gibbs ever since I heard one for the first time. I said, "What the hell was that!?!" and left from the pistol match to investigate the noise. I waited for the shooter to finish his string marvelling at the size of the ejected cases and inquired politely about the caliber. He told me all about his load and offered me a shot under the guise of helping him confirm his zero. It was amazing to experience the ride of that caliber.

@Dewald Like your list but you forgot the coolest of the big bore cartridges. The .475 No. 2 Jeffery. At least it's my favorite hands down.

Yes it is a great cartridge . I have used an old Jeffery boxlock shooting the 475 No2 Jeffery at buff . It certainly worked ! A really impressive looking cartridge .

With good reason, like there are at least 20 better cartridges. :ROFLMAO:

I could only come up with 17 interesting alternatives...
1 .375 H&H - most versatile rifle in the world
2 .416 Rigby - siren's song that calls to me
3 .450 3¼” - I would really love a #1 blued
4 .458 Lott - it is a great cartridge…
5 .450 Rigby - a .458 that isn't a weatherby
6 .470 NE - because resale value
7 .500 Jeffery - horsepower and dancing backwards
8 .505 Gibbs - I’ve always loved that massive case...too
9 .510 Gibbs - because the case is great and the diameter wasn't common enough.
10 .577 TRex - Because energy and unprepared people splattered on plexiglass...
11 .495 A-Square because we're short and sneaky...
12 .700 RNE - because you can put your thumb...
13 .585 GMA -because we don't need to lie about bore diameter.
14 .404 Jeffery - because we need to lie about bore diameter and drink Kool aid and be odd looking.
15 .50-90 Sharps - because @Rafiki and @michael458 laid the ground work
16 .405 Win - because @crs laid the groundwork
17 .45-90 - because @crs laid the groundwork

Just wanted to say thanks for the excellent customer service. Ordered some 9.3x62 brass and the delivery was a little short. An email through your website Contact Us link was replied to the next day with the tracking info for the correction. Good pricing coupled with great customer service will see returning customers every time. Thanks again!
