First Safari — HHK Safaris Reviews

I’m in the process of planning my first Safari. HHK Safaris was recommended to me but the person who did so hunted with them quite a few years ago.

Has anyone hunted with them recently? Any feedback?

For context I’m looking for a buffalo hunt with a few other plains game. A sable would be amazing as well but not critical. Mainly I want the real safari experience.

I have not hunted with them, but I’d tell you looking at Zimbabwe the concession you’d hunt is more important than the outfitter. Some concessions will have a few buffalo in pockets, others only on boundary, some have good numbers throughout, some have been poached hard, etc. A hunter can have a very different experience than another hunter with the same outfitter depending on the concession they hunt. I’d compare a few outfitters on their primary areas.

There was at least 1 report and some discussion on HHK relatively recently i can remember but interesting “HHK” won’t produce anything for me in search results.

There are more on here, only heard good things about them & for a very long time, a few of my hunters have hunted with them, one this year as I remember ?

He was after Old Scrum Cap type Bulls.

HHK has been guiding in Zim for decades. I would get 10 references from this past season with hunters who hunted Buffalo and Sable and book the area and PH where references were successful and give solid information. This is how I’ve checked up on the 21 outfitters I’ve hunted with in Africa. You need current info from the 2024 season. No exceptions when it’s your money!!!

there are many other outfitters that you should consider..... CM safaris, anyone in the Save valley, Bubye conservancy etc etc

I have hunted with them on a multiple safaris this year in Zimbabwe under PH Wayne Grant( Freelance and Independent PH)who happens to be my tutor as I am a freelance Learner PH.HHK is the biggest outfitter in Zimbabwe running about 7 concessions across the country. Back in June, I hunted some plains game which included Bushbuck in Save Conservancy and the hunt was successful. I did a buffalo, hippo and plains game hunt(10 day hunt) in Charara Concession this July and it was successful, we got all the trophies. Last month, October we had a 14 day lion hunt with other game species in Deka Concession we got the lion. I personally hunted with some of their pHs ( Mathew ; Kevin Baisley) and their good. HHK Safaris has good hunting camps too. From my research analysis and experience I have encountered with them this year, HHK can deliver results and there good in this industry. There are many concessions in Zimbabwe and outfitters such as Charlton McCullum Safaris, Thierry Labat Safaris, Roger Whittall Safaris , Cliff Walker Safaris who are good too in the industry.
[redacted] for more detail.
Have a good day.

Yes, in 2005. However, they have changed dramatically over the years. They have been around in various shapes and set ups. Do you "due diligence".

Thanks all. I’ve corresponded with Graham Higgeston on their offerings. He is suggesting the Charrara area for the hunt. He says they have good numbers of buffalo in the area but a a bit light on sable.

I’ll be following up with the references he provided who have hunted with them the last two years.

I’m open to any other remediations as well.

I would think for Sable you want to be in far East, so Kazuma, Ngamo and the area around Vic falls and Hwange

See what their references say. It was my understanding charara has/had considerable poaching going on but is generally successful.

For other recommendations I’d go to the hunt report section if this website and search “Zimbabwe” using titles only and selecting only the hunt report forum. For a buffalo/sable combo I’d look into charlton mccallum safaris in dande north or any of the matetsi blocks. Matetsi 2 with classic African hunting would be my first choice there. Makuti with Mbalabala safaris could be a good choice too.

Yes l do.... I know the company has been through alot of ups and downs but there are still in the game fighting for professional standards like any firm wishes continue doing.

Charara is good for buffalo all year around.
But for sable I am not sure, I have never seen any whilst hunting there.

I would say do your research. They are a large operation but like others have mentioned, been through a lot. Personally I would go with another outfit before looking at them.

If Sable is important just go to Zambia, plenty of buff as well. That was told to me by CMS. You can get good sable in Zim but not like it used to be. Forestry has some good bulls.Enjoy the process!!

That’s probably a true statement. There are better sable and more of them in the kafue in Zambia. Mozambique has large numbers of sable too but generally not huge horns. Zimbabwe has good opportunity at better pricing though. Was there some context when they made that suggestion? When I hunted there in July this year they had already taken their quota of sable from dande north for the year. I saw several herds of sable and a few nice bulls. There may have been some quota still remaining in the east but I don’t think their sable quota compares Zambia or Mozambique concessions. I’m not sure the quota other valley concessions get. I know Nyakasanga gets no sable on quota. I was successful on a nice sable in dande east in 2021 and my dad took a very nice sable in matetsi 2 earlier this year. I think Zimbabwe still provides a good opportunity on sable.

you'd probably have better luck in the Mukuti area for Buff and Sable. This area is adjacent to Charara. Tinnie kok has that concession.
CM Safaris hunt both in the Dande concession. Save and Bubye valley have both. Coutada 9 with Mokore Safaris has plenty of game, There are some recent reports on another forum,
