Zimbabwe Buffalo 2023 - Recommendations

This is the Dalton we hunted with.

I have known Dalton since our first hunt at Sengwa in 2017, he was camp manager there and working on his PH license. He is a very upright/honest person and we hit it off right away. In 2019 we hunted the SVC with Mokore (Doug was out PH in the SVC and Sengwa). Dalton was managing the camp there with his girlfriend Jaimie, it was like a reunion, and he took and passed his PH test that October. I have since hunted Sengwa again in 2020, with Doug being my PH for the 3rd time. I have the highest regard for Mokore Safaris and you cannot go wrong with any of their PH's or areas. I do favor the accomodations in the Save, but like to hunt Sengwa better.

Wow did not know this. I am looking for a future Elephant hunt in Zimbabwe ( hopefully the next couple of years) but this screws up of bringing my own gun. @VertigoBE you are aware of this with your plans to hunt in Zimbabwe with your own guns?

I am now… this is very worrisome news… yet I have not heard this news from anyone or anywhere else. I think it merits some more investigation, before jumping to conclusions.

As others have already said, there is an issue going directly from the EU to Zimbabwe with firearms regardless of your citizenship. And yes the way around is to book one ticket from the EU to South Africa, then a second (separate) ticket from SA to Zimbabwe. Pretty simple really, although you do have the additional hassle of permits in SA... but you can just give Rifle Permits a call!

Does this have to be via South Africa, because it would turn a quick 14hr flight from Brussels to Doha/Dubai to Harare, into a more cumbersome 28hr flight by dropping to Johannesburg, an additional layover there and the going back up to Harare.

Flying from Amsterdam would cut your time short. If needed.

In the end it will be sorted out.

As I understand it, you could break the ticket wherever as long as the EU flights are on a separate booking from the Zim flights.

Was hunting with Neil Duckworth for buffalo and elephant. Dalton was an appy at the time, and accompanied us on our daily treks. I carried my 375 H&H as we were hunting buffalo first, and had Dalton tote my 458 Lott in case we crossed elephant. Would also provide backup , since there were cow elephant groups all around, as well as buffalo. I was 4 or 5 days into it before I realized that he never loaded the rifle. Just carried it empty. We remedied that.

Yes you would have to claim and recheck all bags, including guns. Some airlines have bag agreements and can check bags from one ticket to another, regardless if it's a separate ticket, but I wouldn't count on that! Plan for the worst and hope for the best is a good way to approach it.

LOL sounds like something Dalton would do, he's left handed anyway so your rifle might not have done him much good. He has his own Lott now, left handed to boot.

You do know I am 40 minutes away from the airport to pick you up for a good meal and we have a spare bed.

I could even arrive early and spend a few days in SA before going through to Zimbabwe…

The more I think of it, having to go through SA before flying on to Zimbabwe, might be a bonus after all…

I recently hunted buffalo Zimbabwe with Mokore at the Save’ conservancy and had Dalton McLintock as PH. A wonderful experience and I recommend all the above! I commented on the firearm import permit situation in the “ Country” info thread. Bringing your own rifle is not legal for Canadians either. But Mokore supplied a good rifle to rent, I have no regrets.

John is too good a man to come on and say anything. He is well aware of Mopani and his comments as are the staff at the BVC.

The BVC is not the perfect place, but no place is perfect. The BVC has done well for me and my family and countless others. It has lots of Buffalo and without knowing the numbers, only a few people walk away empty handed. I would recommend the BVC to anyone and will return again.

Here is John and a client from this week with a 40" Bull with 16" bosses. They have seen hundreds of Buffalo and followed them everyday until this one presented themselves.

One thing I can promise anyone is that if the area he was hunting had no Buffalo, John Sharp would refuse to book a Buffalo hunt.

He would most likely move out of the area completely, but he certainly would not book Buffalo hunts for an area that was lacking buffalo.

There were hardly any buffalo, just two small herds plus a couple of bulls which we only saw for a split second. Of course John Sharp would be able to confirm this.

Just buy a ticket to JNB. And then a separate ticket from JNB to Zimbabwe. And make sure the tickets are not linked in anyway. And get a RSA rifle permit.

Just saw a recent comment and very disappointed with that person.

John Sharp and David Langerman are in the Bubye now and are already successful. I believe John was there for around a month previous and took 4 or 5 Buffalo. Don't want to fan the fire but again there are plenty of Buffalo in the Bubye.
