ZAMBIA: Classic Sable, Classic Caliber Hunt With spike.t At Takeri Reserve Zambia

Good luck Dave, I will hopefully make it to hunt there one day

What else is on the list other than the sable?
We're not real picky after Sable. Maybe Lechwe, Defassa Waterbuck or bushbuck. Whatever Africa offers up.

This should be good! Looking forward to the report! Really need to get to Zambia once as well...

A few?
Keeping up with Mike gets you a cherished trophy on the wall of the bar.

Good luck on all fronts.

Happy Hunting! Nothing greater than being on Safari with your kids. Looking forward to the report.

Thanks for all the well wishes. I've received a few PMs asking some questions, so I will try to answer them.

How and why Takeri and @spike.t ?? I read hunting reports from @gillettehunter and @Red Leg and Takeri looked like real deal hunting for Sable in their natural habitat. Lots of great communication, photos, videos, etc. from Mike and super easy to deal with. @PeteG has also chimed in too.

Classic Caliber? Why not the 375 Ruger? Mike and I talked about the various caliber guns I have available. For my daughter, I was thinking either the 7x57 or a 30-06. Mike said bring the 7x57 with heavy bullets. @Red Leg hunted with Mike a couple of years ago and utilized the 275 Rigby with outstanding results. I worked up a load with 160 gr Swift A-Frames and H-4350 powder, yielding 2530 fps with very low SD and ES. For me, I was considering the 338 WM, 375 Ruger or 404 Jeffery. Mike said bring the 404. This will be my first hunt with the 404, probably a good idea to do a PG hunt with it prior to going on a DG adventure. It's a bit more gun than one needs for PG, but it will make for an interesting hunt. I am using 400 gr Swift A-Frames and H-4350 power, yielding 2300 fps.

Airlines? I really wanted to give Qatar a try. Reading hunting reports from various AH members saying they got B-class for $4k got me interested. I am paying for two tickets (me and my daughter) so it was somewhat painful at $4k a piece, but I was willing. When I started checking though, Qatar wanted $8k to 9k a piece and that just wasn't an option. I ended up getting us Delta Premium Select seats with miles, so saved a bunch of money. I booked the Delta flights in late January and the itinerary has changed 3 or 4 times. We'll have a 5 hour layover in Atlanta going there, but that is tolerable. This gets us to JNB and we'll overnight at the City Lodge. On a separate ticket, we'll fly Airlink to Lusaka.

Travel Agent Jennifer Ginn at @TRAVEL EXPRESS . She handled the Airlink reservations, City Lodge and also hotel reservations in Lusaka. Excellent service and communication!

Sounds like a blast. Best of luck to you both. Looking forward to the report and pics. I hope you both enjoy every minute together. Safe travels.

One week from today, my daughter and I are heading to Mike Taylor's (aka @spike.t ) Takeri Game Reserve in Zambia. We'll be hunting with @PeteG

We hope to get a couple of these:

Good luck on your hunt. I had the pleasure of meeting Mike and he seems like a fella that would be fun to be in camp with.

best of luck and looking forward to your report!

Sounds like a great trip to share with your daughter. Safe travels and good hunting. Can't wait for the report.

Sometimes life throws you a curve ball and you have to deal with it. Sometimes, you shoot yourself in the foot and wonder how you managed to do that.

This past Saturday I up on a 16 ft extension ladder, trimming a tree. I was probably 10 ft off of the ground and managed to fall, landing on my back like a big time wrestler. My wife witnessed the fall and came to my aid. I could tell I was seriously hurt, but was conscious the entire time. She then phoned a neighbor who is an ER doc. He came over and checked me out and called 911. I got to ride in the fire department ambulance to the local ER. After x-rays and CT scan, I was told I had two fractured vertebrae. I was then transferred by another ambulance to the trauma center and got to spend two days at that facility. Had a MRI done (really loud event where they give you earplugs). Doctors determined surgery was not needed, but I need to where a brace for 6-8 weeks.

So my daughter and I will not be getting on the plane tomorrow to start our Zambia adventure.

I called the Delta Gold Elite number and in 2 minutes had my flights cancelled and miles recredited to my account. This was almost too easy!

Sent a WhatsApp message to Mike and we are working on new dates, hopefully later this year.

Emailed Henry at Rifle Permits and told them of the cancellation and got a quick reply from them.

Sent a note to @TRAVEL EXPRESS and Jennifer cancelled all the reservations. Airlink does not make refunds, but they do create credits for future flights. Hopefully I will use them in 2-3 months.

While my accident was bad and quite painful, I am thankful to be alive, not paralyzed, and not having to have surgery. While my hunt to Takeri is simply postponed to a later date, I am regrettably going to forgo my Montana archery elk trip for September. That's a physically demanding hunt and I just know I won't be able to do it.

To be continued...............

Oh sh*t, glad you are ok. Take it easy and let your back heal completely. Do whatever physical therapy necessary to get healthy again. Good luck with the recovery. Whew, the stupid sh*t we do sometimes.

Very sorry to hear about this. Hoping for a rapid recovery

Really sorry to hear your news - was looking forward to the report! On the plus side, you're here to tell us about it, so . . . somone was watching over you.

Quick return to full health.

Uh yeah- in what world did you think that was needed days before departure? :p Glad to hear it wasn't worse.

Heck I stopped playing in my 50+ yr old softball league 2 months before my trip and wouldn't leave my house 5 days before .

Maybe it was fate intervening so you could kill a 50" sable when you finally arrive.

Sorry to hear about your fall, speedy recovery and hopefully you’ll be back in action soon!

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
