Your Favorite African Animal

The spiral horns for me, any and all of them. My most prized trophy for time spent, difficulty, method of hunting, rarity, etc., the Zambezi sitatunga

My favorite African animal that I've hunted is the kudu. Those curvy horns just draw you in until your mesmerized. Kido Safaris Feb 28, 2014

My favorite African animal that I have not hunted yet would be the cape buffalo. After seeing this guy I was trying to figure out a way to get him on the hunting list. Next trip ..........

Buffalo, without any doubt, for me it´s the african animal. If I had the necessary finances and space in my house, I would hunt one every year.

What a fine buffalo!

Elephant....because of the size, intelligence and possible danger/excitement..

Hope to hunt them later this year...it is a dream to shoot ele with an old british double..

While kudu are handsome animals, and my hunt last summer for them was very challenging (mountainous, rocky terrain and a 25o yard shot), I would have to say that my favorite animal has to be a wildebeest.......I've only shot one, but they are THE animal that represents Africa to me. I've seen tons of documentaries on Africa, and they all seem to feature wildebeest at some point.
My first ever African critter was a blue wildebeest, and it was the first animal taken with my "new" (preowned) Ruger 77 in .338 Win. mag.
They are a very unique looking species.......I just think that they are cool!

Now, if I ever fall into a big pile of money, both cape buffalo and sable are on "the list"!

When I went to Zim in 2011, I was hunting buffalo and plains game. 1 shot on the buffalo. 5 hours of tracking on the Kudu. I look back on it now and realize I probably wanted the Kudu more than the buff - thus leading to the less than perfect shot (buck fever). I love the spiral horns and how regal it looks as it walks. Also, due to that experience, I'm not sure I would ever shoot another Kudu but would like to hunt buff again.

Tough question; I think I have to go with Elephant but buffalo has to be right up there.

I would say because there is just no other animal currently walking the Earth quite like an elephant. To hunt it is a special experience but also one not to be taken lightly.. Not only because it is dangerous and can kill you easily if it so desired... But also because it is such a regal animal, possibly as old or older than the hunter, it has live a long time and seen a lot in it's life. Taking it's life is not to be taken lightly and yet hunting this animal is terribly important to the species and to the world, yet few people can even hope to comprehend this. Then there is the whole human experience and the celebration that ensues along with the satisfaction of feeding a village.

The hunt itself can be very challenging to first find elephants and then to track down a good one, stalk in for a close look, and to stay aware of the wind and the other elephants..... Getting right in amongst a herd of elephants is not something many people have a chance to experience and is not to be taken lightly. The wind is so important as they are better at tracking you down than a bloodhound! Ultimately the challenge and satisfaction along with respect and a little regret at a good shot bringing down such a magnificent beast, hopefully with one clean shot.... And realizing you are the first person to ever put hands on the ivory. It may be a once in a lifetime experience and one which has a very small fraternity.

Very eloquently said ActionBob...

Will have to go with Leopard on this one.
There is also something special about waiting and watching and finally getting the chance to see a Sitatunga silently moving through the reeds.

I'd say the lion because of all of the animals on the African continent, very few inspire the emotion the lion does. There's a reason that all Western cultures crowned the lion as the "King of Beasts." He has power, grace, ferocity all in one package. He is also a symbol of the regal and the royal.

Damn, PeteG, I would love to do a hunt for sitatunga!!!!
