Your 3 favorite hunting cartridges of all time

For North America

30.06

280 REM

300 Win Mag/For the bears.....brown or polar.375 H&H

For Africa

The Trinity

30.06 Batman

.375 H&H Wonder Woman

.416 Superman

IMO anything above a 416 Rem you're just punishing yourself I've shot a lion and a couple of other very large animals with my 416. They didn't flinch from their foot steps.

My all time favorite cartridges:

#1) 6.5x55
#2) 7x57
#3) .30-06
#4) .300 Win Mag
#5) .375 H&H
#6) .444 Marlin

Hawk 2 good cartridges out of the list ain't bad, 7x57 and 444 Marlin but I don't see a Whelen in there mate
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Bob
Seriously a good selection.

Over the years I've killed deer with something like 22 different cartridges. For still hunting in the northern reaches of the country where very large deer can be on the menu my goto for years has been the 30-06 with 220gr RN's, 35 Whelen with 250 RN's and the 375 Win with 250's. For small bores it is the 250-3000 in a Savage 99 and a wildcat 25-204 which matches the 250-3000/257 Roberts factory specs with a 100gr bullet(preferably a 100gr Partition). I've killed a number with the 270 and 140gr game kings.

Use enough gun, you never know when a "biggun" will show up.

.22 Hornet. 45 grains.
30-06. 55 - 220 grains.
.375. 215 - 380 grains.
For those who want to cover the spectrum.
Actually with the heaviest bullet for calibre. Without excessive bullet speed. Superior penetration.
Does it for me.

You know, crazy enough, I’m currently looking for a .35 Whelen!
Not many to be had that won’t make me go broke!

Just buy a cheap savage 110 and get a 35 Whelen barrel. Probably work out cheaper and you have two rifles then.
Bob

Now that’s an idea I didn’t think of to do!
You’re just full of good ideas!

A lot of people think I'm full of something but very rarely good ideas.

My Whelen made on a Stevens 200aka savage 110 originally a 270.
A 5 minute barrel change and you can go f r I'm a,Whelen to a 270 or the other way around.

Well, I don’t have to go and buy an action to make a rifle into .35 Whelen.
I have a Remington Sportsman 78 in .30-06 that I’ve been thinking about either switching the barrel out to .35 Whelen, or boring the barrel out to .35 cal.
Does anyone know how much either would cost roughly?
I’ve got the .35 Whelen bug bad now! GOTTA…HAVE…ONE!!!

Not much of a spread for North America

Start shopping for some Hogdon CFE223 it the best powder for the Whelen. It gives it a real set of balls.
Make sure the barrel is a 1 in 12 twist and 24 or 25 inches.

@Peter Radekevich
Peter feel free to annoy me.
Try the Speer reloading site for the 250 grain hotcore, y our will need some Hogdon CFE223 as well
Bob.

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
Philippe

Hi Walden. Good morning from England, Chris here (The Englishman!) from Croatia. Firstly it was a pleasure to meet you and Michelle - a fellow Sanderson! I have finally joined AH as I enjoy it very much. Glad you enjoyed the hunt and your write up which I read on AR was very good indeed. I am sending on WhatsApp pics from Bojan of some of the animals hunted recently. Take care and best regards. CS.
