Your 3 favorite hunting cartridges of all time

Interesting you picked the WMR over the the long rifle!
Scrum bag , l have plenty of experience with .22 Long Rifle as my former Shikari Partner in the 1960s decade used to use a Brno auto loader in .22 Long Rifle to kill a fair amount of leopards ( under very particular circumstances ) . During my career as a professional Shikari , l personally would use 12 bore SG 12 pellet shot cartridges for leopard . I also own a .22 Long Rifle bolt operation rifle and a Belgian .22 Long Rifle auto loader made by Brno which l used for hunting Sambhar deer from 1972 to 1990. However , it is a poor weapon for anything larger than a hare. The magnum .22 ( which you American gentlemen refer to, as WMR ) is more reliable for deer if the neck region is chosen as a target. Since 2017 , l have purchased and used a beautiful Austrian Rifle in this calibre from ISSC - the bolt operation SPA model in magnum .22 and l find that it can cleanly dispatch a Sambhar deer with a single shot to the neck region , if my aim is true and good sights are used. The larger powder charge over the .22 Long Rifle cartridge is certainly advantageous.

Quite close to perfection! (y)

Looks like 404 Jeff and 7x64
Thanks! I’ve never seen those cartridges in person. Guess I need to get out more?

.22 LR i used as a kid
30-06 my go to gun
12 g O/U shotgun

If only 3

7x57mm Mauser
375 H&H
500 Jeff

Tough question...lots of great options

308 Win (great GP round)
300 Win Mag (Larger plains and N.A. game and any game at longer distances)
9.3x62 Mauser (for pretty much anything, outside of maybe an elephant..quickly becoming my favorite)...when I get a 375 that might take this spot but will have to see when the time comes.

22/250 with 55 grain Bullets
270 W with 130 grain Bullets
338 Winchester magnum with 225 grain Bullets
My same choices including bullet weights if only limited to three cartridges!

Is it a stretch to read into a man's choice of cartridge a proportionate amount about him; hmmmmm....

A 270 has far exceeded my expectations in the 40 years; I would include it as one of the three;

I am, pragmatical then, according to my query.......

My top 3 are.
7mm-08 Remington
30-06 Springfield
500/416 Nitro Express
However I like all calibres. It depends on how well you can shoot them

My top three are
35Whelan loaded with either a 225grain accubonds at 2,900fps or a 250gn Speer hotcore for 2,700fps takes care of anything from a sabre tooth field mouse up.
My beloved custom 25/303 Epps Newton improved, fast, flat and deadly.
1885 custom load wall in 22K Hornet.

My son disagrees with me
308 for everything he has shot including a big Hartman zebra and Oryx
222 rem for other stuff.
22lr for his constant practice. Cheap to run.
12 gauge ou.
