Your 2025 Hunt Plans?

Hunting mostly local this year, having a good friend and later my sister over to hunt whitetails at our place in Oklahoma.

Some wild pig hunting locally then Texas for Nilgai. Very much looking forward to Africa in 2026.

Alberta, Canada for Moose in September

2026 may include Dove & Duck in Argentina!

I've got to make it back over to South Africa to hunt with my buddy Gerhard Pretorious at GPFootprint Safaris sometime! gpfootprintsafaris.com
We had an absolute blast last time!

Almost the New Year. Have fun at the upcoming conventions, if you plan to attend.

My scheduled hunt plans for 2025 so far - Alaska Dall Sheep, Brooks Range, guided, rifle,10 day backpack hunt, August 2025. (2nd attempt for a Dall Sheep). Previous hunt was in August 2020.

Can't wait. Training continues. 237 days, 11 hours, and 49 minutes out...but who is counting.

What are your plans? Best of luck with your upcoming scheduling and planning for 2025, TheGrayRider a/k/a Tom.

Update: Alaska dall sheep hunt now in 127 days 6 hours, and 42 minutes. The training continues. Pre-hunt and post-hunt reservations already secured.

Summer will be here and gone in a flash. Happy hunting to all this coming fall season, TheGrayRider a/k/a Tom.

Kamchatka, bear hunting in August. I'm thinking of combining this with fishing in the river and sea. It's going to be fun.

There are no plans for autumn and winter yet, but who knows, maybe some interesting offers will appear.

Africa is possible next year, but it's too early to talk about it.

What an incredible hunt

There are more and more bears there, and they are coming serious trouble to the inhabitants of the peninsula. Attacks on humans are often recorded. Sometimes fatal. In small towns, there are even special self-defense units against bears. They are joined by local hunters and generally everyone who has a weapon.

I was lucky enough to participate in the work of such a group a few years ago. We went on calls from farmers who were attacked by bears. Several particularly brazen animals had to be shot. And it was legal, documents were drawn up that each bear was killed for a reason, but because he attacked.

But I can say that it is usually small animals that behave aggressively. Large bears have their own territory, they sit where there are a lot of fish, cones and berries. But small bears, in search of food, are forced to go out to people, climb into garbage cans and approach human habitations. Sometimes it ends badly for them, sometimes for people.

Very interesting, also considering that your Bears are I believe, more or less the size of a big Peninsula / Costal Brown, or Kodiak Bear.
Can only imagine how scary can be a face to face with one of these beast, the local population lives in terror!

May I ask, what caliber do you use in those units, and if is the same gun/ammo combination that you'll adopt for your hunt..?

In Russia the number of bears is constantly growing. In various parts of the country. This happens for many reasons, but above all because young people are not very interested in hunting. Priorities have changed a lot. And the laws of gun ownership are constantly being tightened, so many people simply do not want to deal with its registration.

The largest bears in Russia live on the Kamchatka Peninsula and on Sakhalin Island. Of course, the locals will say that their bears are bigger than in Alaska and Kodiak. And in Alaska they will say that they have the largest bears. I never participate in these arguments, it doesn't make any sense.

I've been using the Sako 85 Kodiak for bears for a long time in caliber .375 H&H Mag. But I don't live in Kamchatka, I fly there to hunt. And for locals, this caliber is rare, they most often use semi-automatic weapons in calibers .308 win, 7.62x54R and .30-06. But not only that. Here are the weapons of the four Kamchatka huntsmen with whom I hunted most often:

Blaser R93 (9.3x62)
Blaser R8 (.300 WM)
Tiger (7.62x54R)
SKS (7.62x39)

The latter caliber is not suitable for a bear at all. However, it is used by a very experienced hunter who has hunted this animal since childhood, knows its habits and weaknesses. He knows where to shoot to cause serious harm to the bear, and rarely misses. But I wouldn't go for a bear with 7.62x39.

Hi All! I’m new here and headed to South Africa for the first time in May. I grew up hunting whitetail in Ohio and moved to SC in 2007. I’ve made several trips to Montana for deer hunts but never imagined I’d be headed overseas on a hunt. I’ll be hunting with Monkane Safaris in Thabazimbi, Limpopo. My father in law won a hunt for two at a charity auction. The hunt includes 2x blue wildebeest or zebra, 2x impala and 2x porcupine. I’m planning to hunt as many additional species as possible. I’m hoping to bring home a blesbok, gemsbok, springbuck, and then kudu/eland or sable. So thankful for this forum and the opportunity to hunt South Africa. I’m planning to keep a journal and share my experience with the group here.

I also put in for Montana again this year and if drawn I’ll be headed back in November with another Deer Combo. Harvested a nice whitetail last year.
