You Tube Hunting Couple Brown Bear Gone Wrong

As a brown bear guide who guides not far from where this video was taken, I only allow first shots under 200 yards. There’s no reason to shoot farther. It’s too risky on a DG animal.

Bears don’t have particularly good eyesight. If you have the wind and know anything about stalking, you can get under 200 yards most of the time. Heck, I’ve guided successful bow hunters on springtime spot/stalk hunts! The shot yardages on the three hunters I guided in Spring 2022 were 125 yards, 30 yards and 50 yards. The AK Peninsula is open for spring hunts every other year. I’m looking forward to May 2024!

Interesting. I had the exact opposite occur. My hand loads have never malfunctioned. My Federal Premium Factory loads did however. For my hand loads I do the following: 1. Never even come close to maximum loads. 2. Incredibly misticulous for each and every load. 3. Almost Zen like calm and take my time on each and every round. 4. I will load 20, shoot 5 quickly before taking the remaining 15 on a hunt
Well then what do you do when your ultra mag needs to be an ultra ultra mag???

I know reloads aren't always an option for a lot of hunters but when I reload, check powder level before seating bullets and then with the firing pin removed, cycle them through the rifle. For me, that process forestalls any issues with duds or malformed rounds.

Or cycle them with 3-position safety on position two, striker locked and bolt free. I imagine soldiers during WWII might have done the same with Mausers or Springfields in preparation for a firefight. At least make sure the ammo in magazine will cycle okay. Might be a bit tedious putting ammo back in stripper clips but certainly doable.

I've never removed the firing pin or have a 3 position safety on the majority of my hunting rifles. But I will cycle each and every round that I take hunting when I am at the range prepping for my hunt

I was frankly pulling for the bear.
a majestic creature like that big brownie deserved better than to be sniped at from 500 yards away. this hunt dishonored that bear. hats off to that bear for fighting until its last breath. thats what they do. what an amazing creature. not that i want anything to happen to a hunter but its heartbreaking to see such a beast taken like that.

they already hiked 6 miles. a proper hunt would have them getting within couple hundred yards and placing a proper shot on that animal. the animal probably would have dropped much much sooner, and the trouble that ensued would have been avoided. they cant go 300 more yards?!

They foreshadowing at the beginning of the tape saying “ we probably should have brought some snowshoes “

I haven't watched this video. Can see no reason to feather their internet hits nest. So, who was filming this clown parade? Was there a camera crew along or just the wife?

I'm seeing so many awful African safari YouTube videos, I'm almost ready to give up. As I understand it, every time someone clicks on one of these nincompoop videos, the publisher stands to benefit financially. Of course, I shut down once it's evident the performance is a dud. But by then the damage is done. They are already getting paid. So many of the hunting videos are so obviously staged it's almost laughable. The camera is in front of the downed Cape buffalo bull as PH and client cautiously approach and PH carefully pokes it in the eye with shooting sticks. "Yep, he's dead!" Like the camera crew hadn't already established that fact before setting up in front of black death's nose? Pfft! And the corny background music! Ugh! There is one African safari outfit whose videos I enjoy very much. Nothing staged that I can tell. PH's are smooth talkers, very engaging, and informative. Really nice guys you'd want to meet. The filming is also first rate. Very clear to me that clients have been lined out off camera so everything goes like clockwork. I'm sure this outfit has its share of nincompoop clients and accidental screwups but very few make it to the internet. This is a classy outfit. Name must be withheld due to site restrictions ... which I understand completely.
You have to get something like a million views to get paid.

This is very good that you are meticulous.

I never push for speed. I am after terminal performance, reliability and accuracy. Excess speed can have a very negative effect on all three. The bear in the photo experienced the effect of a 270 gr Swift A-Frame launched from my .375 H&H. It is a very decisive bear load, but the whiz bang guys would be disappointed in the velocity.

I have developed some very good loads with 142 gr ABLRs for my 6.5 PRC specifically for Coues deer. The higher velocity of this round really puts stress on bullet selection, specifically as regards terminal performance. I shot two bucks on our Alabama farm under more ‘controlled’ conditions to make sure I was happy with terminal performance before declaring it ready for AZ.

Bottom line, I totally respect your position as a generality, but I am quite confident that my loads meet or exceed anything I could buy over the counter.
You are doing it right! You are not pushing velocity and you are actually harvesting game with your loads.
This same conversation comes up over and over. Someone gets in a dangerous situation because of their reloads. I support everyone in how they want to hunt. I just have to make the point from time to time that there are real dangers out there if things are not done properly.

...Comforting to know we have a modern day St. Hubertus to look out for us ill-informed nimrods.;)

Scott, if I am ever fortunate enough to bring my .375 Weatherby I built up there and hunt with you (a brown bear is on my list), I don't want it to be over 100 yards. I'm thinking 50-75 would be better. Take care - Jim

I watched til the very end. I do think they "learned" a few lessons and included the 5 things they'd do differently in the future, which all appeared to be great advice for anyone doing the same. Their actions put themselves in that moment, no excuses there, but yeah the guy kept it together and stopped a brown bear charge with a pistol at 5 yds. Not a lot of noobs going to pull that off.
I'd take his lady hunting with me any day. Not sure I could have kept up with her.

you are exactly right. here is the problem, shooting at a 500+yard bear, it is going to run after the first shot, who knows ANYONE that can hit a running bear at 500+ yards? NOBODY!!

i too guide brown bears, the 200 yard rule is a good one. i know a guy that lost a bear (a legit 10' bear) that was shot initially at 300 yards. the client insisted on the guides holding off on backup so he could do it himself. hmmmm, (there was another guide along for the fun of it) the bear was hit poorly the first time and took off and neither guide was able to hit the bear as it ran off. all were shooting 375 's. that bear was never recovered, was tracked for a mile after the hit.

on a bear, the first shot is the most important, the rest are just gravy if you used a big enough gun, a good bullet and placed the bullet well. even then, many times a bear will need more shots to finish things. its hard to place more shots on target if the range is too far.

hopefully that couple learned something.

Yeah she’s cute but not qualified to guide brown bears yet.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
