Would you shoot this bull?

Kevin, I’ll start an award for old past breeding age plains game. Maybe a Westley Richards rifle for you and the PH.

What do you think W.R. ?

Broken horns seem to add a few years automatically. This bull looks in extremely good condition. If he had both horns we’d be saying he was in his prime. Same thing happens with buffalo bulls with broken horns.

They look worn smooth too. Or am I seeing it wrongly

They do look worn but doesn’t appear an unusual age class. You’re trying to make an old mature bull an ancient bull.

As a first kudu I would not shoot him, I wanted a “typical” horned bull. I got an toothless bull with a snare stuck in his temple and in an eyeball.
I would definitely shoot him as a second bull and mount him in a full sneak pose.

Kevin lives in Africa, so he sees the value in collecting this old bull.

(I'm pulling for you buddy!)

I live in America, so I have a different "mindset."

I would only take it if is was offered at a great price, or if hunting kudu, to me, were so common place, that I could give the old gentleman a special place on the wall.

For me, I only want one mature specimen for the wall.

If the opportunity presented itself to get a record book animal, I would probably take it. (I saw one in Mozambique, but didn't have a permit!)

I would have to have to have collected several kudu bulls, before I would start shooting old bulls with "character."

Just me...

I'm satisfied with this, until a RW record book animal comes along...

That kudu didn't get that old by making mistakes, so it would likely be a challenging hunt. But as others have stated, I would shoot it but only at a cull price. That said, I already have one mounted at the house, so in view of current taxidermy and shipping costs, the "trophy" here would likely consist of a photo and the memories of the hunt.

Maybe he’s really smart and intentionally broke his own horns knowing no one would hunt him?

Of course he couldn’t be too smart, he always out posing for pictures… Would be an easy shot.

I’d shoot anything that was free and needed to be removed. A buddy and I once shot 13 springbok on the last day of a Namibia hunt for $50 a head. The first 7 days of the hunt were spectacular both of us taking many great trophies. Note to self African outfitters…don’t casually mention at dinner that you need to thin the herd of springbok to a midwestern boy that grew up hunting and had no trouble stacking up 15-20 whitetails group hunting every season LoL

:S Agree:

I am not a trophy hunter per se. The state of Alaska, for my game management unit, says that any antlered bull moose is fair game, and a quick check of many of my bulls would tell you I take advantage of that - I like moose meat. That said, paying for it, I want something more. Not for the sake of measuring, but something that appeals to me aesthetically, and the worn or scrum cap look doesn't. For those that it does... as Hoytcanon said: more power to you, and I am happy for you - truly.
I’m in the same boat as the two of you. Plus I’ll bet he’s got excellent genetics to pass on yet.

Only as a cull. I think it would make an interesting euro mount.

Nice Report! Im about to pull the trigger on booking the LDE with Patrick. I have been talking about it with him for about 3 yrs now. Romain hit me up the other day with an offer I can't refuse for 2027.

Andrew, I commented that your on 375 H&H for sale was the fair price.

Like I commented, my classic stainless has the original 24” barrel.

Did you buy yours with the barrel already cut down to 21” or did you do it (or a gunsmith)?

You might have edited your post on the PH in the Bubye. I know the PH and is a wonderful person and a fmaily man and runs a succesful business in Zim and just doesn't want the attention that the internet offers, the ugly kind.
