New Zealand has a total of 13 huntable species.

Daily bag limits are between 2 - 25 depending on the species.

New Zealand is a country full of scenic beauty and abundant wildlife – unencumbered by predator problems. The duck population has been allowed to flourish here, since the nests are not tormented by the predators you'll find in North America.

We have an excellent operation for those hunters who want to see a different shooting environment, and see birds available no place else on earth. Mallards were introduced to New Zealand before the turn of the 20th century, and have had phenomenal success there. We also have native species, the unique and beautifully painted paradise duck, about the size of a small snow goose, and the gray duck, which is similar to the mallard. We also hunt the black swan, another species introduced in New Zealand.

WINGSHOOTING
...A Few Things To Know

This hunt should not be considered a high-volume hunt, but more an adventure for the collector, and for someone seeking a totally unique experience. Coupled with a big game hunt, this can be an excellent add-on to a true New Zealand safari.

Our main season is the first weekend of May through to July with an early short season in March.

We also have a local pheasant season from April to August, as well as merrium turkey hunting. New Zealand Safaris has one of the highest populations of wild merrium turkeys on one of our properties that has an open season.

Does turkey hunting coincide with any part of the waterfowl season?

Think Turkey season is wide open. I definitely want to hunt Black swans someday.

Sounds like a great bird adventure!

Yes, the waterfowl season can coincide with a turkey hunt. The waterfowl season is normally the 1st weekend of May through the end of July. Turkey season is anytime of the year. If you are interested in more details just send me a message.

What limitations are there on shot and bringing guns into the country?

Bringing a firearm into New Zealand is pretty simple. You just apply online for your visitors firearm license and import permit from the New Zealand Police about one month in advance of your arrival. As for ammunition, you can bring up to 5kg.

thanks for the quick response, but what I was asking (rather unclearly) was about the type of shot allowed. Is steel mandatory? 5 kg is about one box, so I'd be purchasing ammunition in country, however all of my guns are pre-steel so need either lead or one of the No-Tox substitutes that are similar in hardness to lead.

Lead shot is banned in NZ for waterfowl hunting when over or near water.
Lead shot is allowed for non-water fowl or for Canada geese.
We have weird shotshell rules in NZ. Any water fowl covered by game bird regulations is covered by steel shot shell regulations.
Game not covered by game bird regulations and upland game birds can be shot with lead shot. Canada geese were removed from game bird regulations a number of years ago. You could even shoot Canada geese witha rifle.
