Winchester Mode 70 Pre 64 300 H&H

Yes, I think 1952

I was hoping that it might have been 1956 - as I am trying to build a shooting battery of rifles from 1956 (the year of my birth) and I would love to have found a Model 70 in .300 H&H from that year.

So, for your rifle to be 1952, the serial number would fall between 206625 and 238820?

276240 is the sn, I think it's 1953. Rifle is i dated in Ohio.

I am guessing the stock was cut for the pad? What is the length of pull on it?

Not likely. Especially considering the overall condition of the rifle and the obviously new looking pad? Also back in the 50's installing a factory pad on anything other than a .375 or .458 would have been unusual. Further, it comes with an "extra" butt plate. Probably what it left the factory with. I just spent some time looking at many like yours on various seller sites, and the vast majority had steel butt plates, and a few had rubber, mostly Pachys or similar. Perhaps one had a pad like yours but obviously aftermarket. But what is the LOP?

I have the pre 64 steel butt plate as stated in the add, the red pad on their now is a Winchester factory pad, I just swapped them out, lop was not altered, just a simple swap. Both ate included.

Well there ya go. That is not the same thing as a "factory pad". A factory pad is installed at the factory. You have a Win pad added much later. Nothing wrong with adding a pad, I probably would as well. Its just that most often the wood is cut to do so and since yours wasn't it must have an LOP of about 14.5 inches, correct?

SThe lop is 14.5, I just measured, and again I have this pad and the correct original pre 64 factory butt plate.

It looks to me - and I suspect to Sestoppelman - that the stock was squared and cut to allow installation of the pad. In any case, from a collector point of view, the rifle is no longer "original" and will have substantially less interest to the typical collector. It is still a great rifle, and a great traditional rifle with which to hunt. A truly original .300 H&H will push or even exceed 2k. Your price is very fair for the rifle you are offering. Wish I could come up with an excuse to own it!

Ok.....listen up, go back and read the thread, the rifle stock was not modified in anyway shape or form, it was a simple swap between the pre and post64 buttpads, re-read that I interchanged them. This rifles as not been modified, please stop filling my thread with speculation.

Hi Jager,

Would you be interested in a swap for a commercial FN 30-06, I have two with different custom stocks, also have a small ring german mauser action that's sporterized and polished in the white and ready for a custom building project, bolt handle low forged and swept back nicely. Also have a BRNO VZ24 which is military but should be sporterized due to condition of stock and barrel, but for the action, it's perfect for a custom job.

If of any interest, I'd be willing to swap two items for the rifle, although not both FN's.
