Currently looking for Gunsmithing recommendations to build a pre 64 Winchester 70 .375 Ruger, 20” barrel, 2 or 3 leaf rear express sights, swivel band on the barrel, and banded front sight. McMillan fiberglass stock, cerakote etc. it will be used and not babied so looking to build it tough and meant for extreme/harsh use

Located in Texas. I’ve got all dimensions on the exact barrel contour I want, sight placement, set up etc. Just looking for a professional to make it all happen
Okay. But gunsmith to do the build is often not the barrel maker. I had Lija in Plains, MT make the 404 Jeffery barrel for my 98 Mauser build. Dennis Olsen, who also lives in Plains (very small town), cut, crowned, threaded, reamed, and mounted the barrel on my action. I had a local machinist here open the bolt face. The rest of the work I did. A moose outfitter in New Brunswick blued the finished rifle for me and did a great job. Both Plains barrel maker and gunsmith are well known and highly regarded.

Is it a magnum length pre-64 action? Personally since you are putting the money into a custom build I would consider the H&H. Not criticizing the Ruger, but the H&H being around for 113 years at this point can be found in every dark corner of the planet. If for some reason you needed ammo I am sure you could find .375 H&H. Not sure about the Ruger.

So you have a standard length action, not magnum action. I think the shorter bolt throw and lighter weight makes that caliber a good choice for standard length action. I don't know about Model 70, but longer 375 H&H can be made to fit in standard length Mauser. However, it requires significant modification to ramp, rails, and locking ring. 375 Ruger should be an easier fit ( = less $$$ for the build). Is the bolt face big enough on your action?

My Win70 was chambered in .338 Win Mag. Standard length, .532 bolt face. I believe it’s a great choice as well. I handload for the Ruger now and am getting great results with 235gr and 270gr Barnes TSX’s.

Standard length, .532 bolt face. I have nothing against the H&H at all, dang fine cartridge! I just like the Ruger and have everything for it.
