White Sands NM Oryx-Any Experiences Good or Bad

So here's the thing, my son pulled the 1600:1 odds non-resident off-range Oryx tag. Do you know what that accomplishment was actually worth? ZERO DOLLARS.

Because you still have the problem of access to the land. What did we pay in tresspass fees to get access to the land adjacent to WSMR? About the SAME DAMNED PRICE as calling the outfitter, buying his tresspass rights, guide service, and his landowner tag.

If you're going off range, don't waste time trying to draw a tag, its all nonsense. Just call Iron Sights outfitters or another similar guide service and get access to the tag/land/professional whenever you want to do so. Draw is irrelevant.

I tried to look up the outfitter you mentioned, but I can't find anything recent. I believe I found their FB page, but their link to their website on there dead ends and their most recent FB post is from 2017. Do you know if they are still operating?

I drew a tag for Stallion Range the first time out, 35 inches. Shot it at 90 yard. Outfitter was SO outfitters, he actually works on White Sands.

@dlmac do you have a photo you can share?

I do but am in South Missouri getting out of the cold North Plains. Can add when I get back. My hunt was nothing like what most described on this forum.

My brother (he's a resident of N.M.) and a buddy of his, drew a tags on the White Sands missile base last year. They both had great experiences chasing several bulls before finally connecting. My brother harvested a 39" bull. Based their experiences, I'd offer that there's no need for hiring an outfitter there. The oryx are plentiful, and the range master provides instruction and advice to improve your chances, which are close to 100% if you're willing to put in several days of driving and glassing the terrain, and can shoot well at 400+ yards. Drawing a tag- that's another story!

Up until last year I lived and worked all over WSMR for 5 years.

Shoot me any questions you have.

Never did manage to pop one with the .50 on the night qual, but they were enjoyable to have around and didn’t cause much trouble…unless someone managed to total a humvee hitting one.

That’s no joke. Occasionally hit both on and off range. The Holloman folks got really exited when they’d wander over to the Mach 9 sled track! One did get popped by a 50 down on Ft Bliss though, IIRC mid-late 80s. :)

This is from memory, but we hit about 20-30 pieces of wildlife a year on WSMR during the 5 years that I was there.

12-15 were oryx, usually 2 golden eagles, 3-4 pronghorn, 3-4 deer, a couple of elk occasionally. Coyotes and jack rabbits did not count in the talley.

Ironsight Outfitting is very much still in business. As I am here marketing from SA. I rode on 4 oryx hunts with him and his clients. Every hunt was successful and enjoyable. He said due to the multitude of outfitters in N M. He has let his Website go because 90% of his clients are returning guests and word of mouth advertising. (Which in our business is the best). He will visit with anyone at 575-499-4454.

Kind regards
Justin Kemp (Africa Sun Safari)

I've hunted oryx 3 times with Mark and Ironsight outfitters been successful every time. You will not find a better outfit to do this with. Most of his hunts are word of mouth or repeat clients. If you call the 575-499-4454 number you will get him. Last time I spoke with him (about a month ago) he said he still holds the most private land oryx harvested over 300 animals to date.

I saw you were looking for some Swift A-Frames for your 9.3. I just bought a bulk supply of them in the 285g. version. If Toby's are gone, I could let 100 go for $200 shipped you are interested.
Thanks,
Gary
