Which scope for a Model 70 in 416 Remington?

There are a number of excellent options among Leupold, Swarovski, Zeiss, Trijicon. My 416 is topped with a Leupold VX5-HD in 1-5 with a Firedot reticle. I think that Firedot reticle is a game changer for dangerous game hunting. If I didn’t have a claw mount on this rifle (which is really good, IMO) then I’d probably have topped my 416 with the same scope in 2-10x.

My 375 has the 2-10 and it’s excellent.

I have a Leupold Vari X iii in 1.75 X 6 that I had on a Pre 64 70 in 338. That range is nice on a big bore.

I went with the Trijicon 1-6 with the green triangle reticle. It was available with my Cabelas points and seemed like a good choice. I would have preferred the 4a reticle with illumination but it wasn't an option on their website in this scope. They had it in the 1-4 but I wanted the extra magnification.

My m70 has a leupold 2-7 compact

The 416 shoots about as flat as a 30-06 with 180s.

I'd put one of those 1.7-10x42's on it. I think Swarovski used to make something like that. Perhaps others do.

Yes to all above but the old VX lll 1 1/2x5 has been on many hunts and keeps on ticking without any negative feedback. It does and will get the job done.

Am going to Africa for Cape Buffalo and will neeed a scope for a new to me Safari Express in 416?

What do people here use in that situation?
Trijicon Accupoint 1x4x28 or 1x6x28. Run it on 1 and turn it up for distance shots.....use it professionally every day and trust my life to Trijicon Optics.

I don’t disagree with Hillcountry63 but I have the same outfit but I use a NightForce NX-8 1-8.

Africa is a big place. Which country will dictate your needs, but anywhere of 1X to 4X should fill the need. With a 1X4 being perfect for almost any situation.

Yes 1-4. 4x is plenty and usually not needed. Here's my setup on Win 70 416 RM that has proven to work extremely well for both DG and plains game. 2.5 fixed with dual dovetail rings. Takes some mix and match to get the rings and mounts sorted out but I think it as strong a mount system as any available.

I used a Trijicon 1-4 on my M70 416 for elephant and Buffalo. Moved that scope to my CZ 505 Gibbs but I've got a new Trijicon 1-6 in a box if I hunt with that rifle again I'll probably mount that up.

Leupold VX6 2-12X

I’ve got a 2-8x42 Zeiss with IR on my Winchester M70 416 Rem with QD mounts.

I am going in 3 weeks with a 1-6 Trijicon with the green Triangle Post Reticle. Have practiced with it a good bit and really like it so far.

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
Philippe

Hi Walden. Good morning from England, Chris here (The Englishman!) from Croatia. Firstly it was a pleasure to meet you and Michelle - a fellow Sanderson! I have finally joined AH as I enjoy it very much. Glad you enjoyed the hunt and your write up which I read on AR was very good indeed. I am sending on WhatsApp pics from Bojan of some of the animals hunted recently. Take care and best regards. CS.
