Where to move to?

Sheep, cattle and arable. My other work is bank and tax valuations and landlord / tenant work.
Florida is grate for cattle
We all way ran 1 cow calf set to 3 acers and never got Cought out with a drought.
Sheep not so sure about
I have been told limited breads because of the heat and bugs.
+ fox, coyote bear coon maybe panthers depending on who you listen to and so many wild dogs

I understand where you are coming from but the tax system is significantly better in Australia and New Zealand and the availability of hunting and firearms laws more relaxed (not in all of Australia). I don’t want to become a gun collector, it just looks increasingly likely that it will be difficult for me to hunt with my own rifle etc.

Education is a big issue as well. My children are at a great school now, but in a couple of years, they will need to move to either a terrible state school, where 40% of pupils are leaving with no qualifications or an excellent private school. The issue we have now is that from the start of this year, the government introduced a 20% tax on private education, which is paid after 40% income tax. This is pushing education beyond the limit of affordability. My old school closes this year after 430 years on the back of this.
School in the us
Private school trust me there a big big difference

I understand, but if he is wanting to pick up roots and go farm, it is not something to ignore. There are other reasons why America is not a good option for a British farmer, but dying of heat stroke or having a tornado destroy his home are not things to be taken lightly.
That’s what insurance is for

I am still on part of a farm from 1823
Part of the old place is still standing it’s been over grown and not well taken care of that’s because the cousin that got it has only been out 2 times in 40 years
How many storms has north fl had since 1823?

Well with experience you could put in for farm management of part of a corporate farm

Also, if you are an appraiser. I did have a client once who was an appraiser from Canada. Her and her husband emigrated to our area 15-20 years ago. I don’t know what process she went through for certification, but she was a licensed real estate appraiser in Missouri.

Lot is work for that now for the banks with our booming real estate market. (May have quieted down now) but our local bank was waiting 30-60 for real estate appraisals for farm and home loans.
My understanding is that my qualifications are valid in most commonwealth countries, plus I think China!

What is landlord/tenant work?
My professional work is as what we call a land agent here.

I am licensed to value agricultural, commercial and residential property and I also act as a consultant to several landowners, mainly drawing up leases and grazing arrangements, documenting investments made by tenants, some planning work, budgeting, compensation claims from utility companies, undertaking rent reviews and arranging contracts for other farmers to undertake certain works, from a basic cultivation to providing full management services.

There are around 3,000 of us doing this in the UK.

I expect similar roles exist elsewhere I think the role is called a land steward in Ireland and I know there is a similar role in France.

I have a friend who qualified in the UK and then went to work in Kenya but he found that the banks would not use white professionals.

Pulled this off the WWW:

Saskatchewan Canada can be a good place to live, offering a high quality of life, strong community, and affordable living, but its harsh winters and limited entertainment options might be drawbacks for some.

Here's a more detailed look:
Pros:
  • High Quality of Life:
Saskatchewan is known for its friendly people and welcoming community.

    • Affordable Living:
The cost of living, including housing and utilities, is relatively low compared to other Canadian provinces.
    • Strong Economy:
Saskatchewan has a strong economy, particularly in agriculture and natural resources, leading to employment opportunities.
    • Scenic Beauty:
The province boasts beautiful landscapes, including provincial parks and the South Saskatchewan River.
    • Vibrant Culture and Arts:
Saskatchewan has a thriving arts and culture scene, with various festivals, events, and attractions.
    • Family-Friendly:
Saskatchewan is considered a great place to raise a family, with good schools and recreational opportunities.

    • Great hunting.
I’ve hunted there several times. East of Saskatoon. It really is a nice friendly place. That also depends on how far you get away from Saskatoon….

Alaska is the choice I made many years ago.

My knowledge of our state's agriculture is limited but it does exist here, and is quite strong, if more limited than some places.

The rest? Absolutely what you are looking for. We have more personal freedoms than anywhere I have ever lived. And Alaska can be a goldmine for finding good jobs for anyone with any kind of work ethic and any level of education or experience. I would argue those few things can carry you further than anywhere I have ever seen.

Are there trade-offs? Sure. Some don't care for the winters but I would argue the winters offer even more opportunity for outdoor minded people.

I think Alaska is worth considering. It sure has a LOT of what you are wanting to leave the UK for.

I’ve been to all 3 and you’ll find Victoria the closest to the climate your from and NT will be like a tropical alien planet.

Don’t get me wrong I love the NT, but understand your in a tropical environment that can have extreme heat and meters of rain during the rainy season.

But with the weather comes the reward of hunting opportunities; there are vast amounts of public land to hunt and if your a farmer you can get access to firearms licenses easier.

And yes the water Buffalo, scrub cattle, camels, Brumbies, donkeys & pigs…..

I lived in Canberra because of work. Victoria is great, there are some aboriginal settlements to stay away from but most of Victoria away from the cities is great.

NSW is great, same answer on the cities and aboriginals.

Queensland has the same answer. It is home to the nicest Australians. It is bloody hot there.

NT is really bloody hot. Has the most aboriginal problems.

All of Australia has venomous snakes.

Victoria and Tasmania are the coldest.

Take a look at when you can get for your property and what you can buy in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the US.

If I was in your shoes, being an American I would move to the US. There will be things that are important to you that are probably not important to me.

My favorite Canadian place is the Yukon. It is the least screwed up, it also has really bad weather.

As the Yukon is way less developed than Alaska, If I was in your shoes I would pick it.

Thanks for your advice, everyone. I was at the second day of my conference today and in coffee breaks etc, I spoke to 3 people who are in the process of emigrating to New Zealand (South Island), 3 to Australia (Victoria, NSW and Tasmania) and 1 to South Africa (he was returning home).

From what I was told, our qualifications are accepted in Australia, NZ, Kenya, Namibia, China, the UAE and South Africa. There are extra qualifications needed for other countries.

It is a bit of a shock how many are thinking of going. I think the massive tax changes following the last election are pushing a lot of people to go.

More announcements due next Wednesday and there was some cautious optimism that things might improve.

It seems that the UK is destined to repeat history. They had a massive brain drain in the late seventies for very similar issues with a Labor government.

Tell us more about education in Florida. It seems to have challenges.
Well with me when they found out I was a dyslexic .
They completely took me out of any type of English classes
Now that was late 70 so it might have improved. But no type of reading or punctuation until I went to a Christian academy in 6th grade.
Even with them understand the situation
They put me in 2 grades back English classes to get me at least some what in the ball park.
It took everything I could do to make c and d to pass

Well it closed when I got on 11th grade went back to public school . They did not have books the gave us copies of there book.
The stuff we were using was the same books the private school had is using in 7th grad.

11 and 12th i was able to pull my grades up to all a’s and guaranteed as the salutatorian
Because I had the books at the house from the private school

If I could do that its not anything to recommend.
My doughter went to another county’s school
It was better but it was not good.
Her history teacher told the class that America had never been invaded
I ask her to ask the teacher about poncho villa attack in America
And the Japanese on the island close to ak
And about the war of 1812
The teacher said I was makeing stuff up
So I went and had a talk with the principal.

So no I don’t recommend fl public school

I think education is what you make of it, no matter the country or US state. Smaller private schools are available and common in many countries, including the poorest countries and are not very expensive compared to the overburden of taxes, especially property taxes and total cost of living in many parts of US.

As to core question of the OP… I believe there is no perfect place to live, anywhere in the world, if guidelines are excessively narrow. In the end, total cost of living versus actual realized income must be factored into any comparison. And that doesn’t even consider quality of life considerations including unique and subjective intangibles. On the surface, California has the greatest potential here in the US IF you don’t take into account that California has the most liberal left politics in the country along with gross over-regulation, high taxes, high cost of living and poor quality of life in the larger population centers.

Needing job/income as opposed to being retired with adequate money are two different parameters that will also drive final decision for most people.

As some of you might know, I like in the UK. I farm and undertake some property management and valuation work.

Since the last election here, we have endured a daily assault on farming. We now have 20% inheritance tax on farmland, all subsidies and environmental grants removed and face a tax on artificial fertilisers which will cost us £20 per acre each year from next year.

We are also about to see compulsory purchase rules changing to allow the government to forcibly purchase land for nature schemes or under some circumstances to sell on to developers, so the profit goes to the local authority, not the landowner.

We now have 20%tax on school fees from the start of this year.

On top of that it was announced today that the ownership of firearms will be reviewed to seriously tighten up the system and there will be further hunting bans.

I am at the end the first day of a two day conference and the message today was that things won’t get better and to plan for methane and carbon taxes in the next year and possible annual taxes on the value of land. One MP yesterday suggested that all farms over 1,000 acres should pay an annual 2% tax on land value. It seems unlikely though.

My boss sat all of under 50 down and told us that we should all seriously consider emigrating. He told us that two people in our office are moving to Australia this year and we should all consider doing the same.

I have a lot of friends who are actively looking to leave the country now, seemingly mainly to New Zealand.

My wife and I have family in Australia, New Zealand, Kenya and Zimbabwe. We are seriously thinking about selling up and moving to somewhere our children can have a better childhood and a better future.

Anyone have any thoughts on Australia or New Zealand? We both love Namibia but I think making a living there would be very difficult.

I understand the Northern Territory of Australia offers residents free water buffalo hunting and would be similar to Africa but safer to invest capital, but I suspect finding work could be difficult.

We are planning to visit family in Australia and New Zealand in a few months to do some research, but I would be grateful for any suggestions. My cousin in New Zealand loves it there but he said that he would think carefully about moving there as he gets some really severe weather.

Family in Australia have told me to look at Queensland and NT, if we want a rural life with like minded people. Family in New Zealand have said the northern half of the South Island is the best place to look.
I have a pasture egg business, run beef cattle, and do ranch management/consulting in Marin/Sonoma counties, California. Our family has had our ranches here for 120 years.

I have heard these horror stories about farming in the UK and other issues in the commonwealth countries, guns, personal freedoms ect… for years now.

To put in perspective on how drastically different the the US is on these same issues, I am in the thick of the most liberal areas in California, undoubtedly what I and probably most of us from the states would consider some of the worst politics in the US for hunting, guns, personal freedom, taxes, etc…and it’s by no means getting any better.

However… despite this, the public still overwhelmingly supports and values agriculture. Last year animal rights activists got a ballot measure up for election that would have banned all our commercial poultry operations and any ranch with more that 400 cows, most of or local governments came out against the measure and the public voted it down by 92 percent and then they all voted for Kamala on the same ballot . California also still has strong property tax protections for farm land (1/10 the normal rate) and many land trust organizations that help farms and ranches survive. Oh, and it’s also not really a big deal for me to have my 30-06 or a shotgun bumping around behind the seat of my pickup, all the ranchers do it. You can buy an AR15 in any gun shop (just with a 10 round mag limit) or handgun. Also, despite all the covid restrictions, people just kinda did whatever they wanted anyway, local governments outside the big cities have little real power to enforce any of this.

I would not recommend California as it’s way to expensive to move into if your base is not long established here, just bringing this up to show how not so bad even the worst politics in the US can be and in the non-liberal states the personal freedoms are 10x better than CA.

I’m a Brit who emigrated to the South Island of NZ nearly 9 years ago now… moved with two kids and a wife. I’m also an ex Rural MRICS.. more then happy to have a chat to you.
Simply love it down here.. I live between Invercargill and Lake Hāwea based around my wife’s work. Privately educate one child and the other starts next year. Some very good schools in Christchurch.
I think you’d find that there was a great demand for qualified valuers.. I know I’ve been asked multiple times if I’d like to do it again. CBRR have a local office and they are very busy
I don’t think you’d be that busy in terms of property management though.
More then happy to have a chat to you
But in short I’ve not had a single regret!

Thanks. I will send you a PM. It sounds like you were in exactly the same position as me.
