As some of you might know, I like in the UK. I farm and undertake some property management and valuation work.

Since the last election here, we have endured a daily assault on farming. We now have 20% inheritance tax on farmland, all subsidies and environmental grants removed and face a tax on artificial fertilisers which will cost us £20 per acre each year from next year.

We are also about to see compulsory purchase rules changing to allow the government to forcibly purchase land for nature schemes or under some circumstances to sell on to developers, so the profit goes to the local authority, not the landowner.

We now have 20%tax on school fees from the start of this year.

On top of that it was announced today that the ownership of firearms will be reviewed to seriously tighten up the system and there will be further hunting bans.

I am at the end the first day of a two day conference and the message today was that things won’t get better and to plan for methane and carbon taxes in the next year and possible annual taxes on the value of land. One MP yesterday suggested that all farms over 1,000 acres should pay an annual 2% tax on land value. It seems unlikely though.

My boss sat all of under 50 down and told us that we should all seriously consider emigrating. He told us that two people in our office are moving to Australia this year and we should all consider doing the same.

I have a lot of friends who are actively looking to leave the country now, seemingly mainly to New Zealand.

My wife and I have family in Australia, New Zealand, Kenya and Zimbabwe. We are seriously thinking about selling up and moving to somewhere our children can have a better childhood and a better future.

Anyone have any thoughts on Australia or New Zealand? We both love Namibia but I think making a living there would be very difficult.

I understand the Northern Territory of Australia offers residents free water buffalo hunting and would be similar to Africa but safer to invest capital, but I suspect finding work could be difficult.

We are planning to visit family in Australia and New Zealand in a few months to do some research, but I would be grateful for any suggestions. My cousin in New Zealand loves it there but he said that he would think carefully about moving there as he gets some really severe weather.

Family in Australia have told me to look at Queensland and NT, if we want a rural life with like minded people. Family in New Zealand have said the northern half of the South Island is the best place to look.

I've heard the same thing from many UK people not just farmers.

Having been to Australia twice for a total of 3 months on the ground I can tell you that Agriculture is big business there and I think you would get along well with the laws and regulations.

Just do your homework and take time to talk to the local farmers.

Thank you. We are planning to visit family and family friends in Victoria, NSW and the NT.

All of your options are nice. I worked in Australia and NZ. Great places. A bit too liberal for me but nice people.
Kenya and Zim are Africa. Lot's of craziness there. Being white, you may want to think twice.

I’ve been to all 3 and you’ll find Victoria the closest to the climate your from and NT will be like a tropical alien planet.

Don’t get me wrong I love the NT, but understand your in a tropical environment that can have extreme heat and meters of rain during the rainy season.

But with the weather comes the reward of hunting opportunities; there are vast amounts of public land to hunt and if your a farmer you can get access to firearms licenses easier.

And yes the water Buffalo, scrub cattle, camels, Brumbies, donkeys & pigs…..

Currently visiting NewZealand
from Australia. It’s a stark contrast in landscape.
Bumped into some Aussies from Victoria who know my home town and think the south island in NZ is the pick of them.

Small world, they like me like my home town but it’s very different from here and other parts of Australia

You cannot beat the south island of New Zealand. Stunning country, heavy agricultural, some of the most beautiful part of the world. No questions asked.

What did you farm?
Florida has a good bit of agriculture.
The bee farming has been introduced to me and we are starting that.
I still grow hay

Tennessee may be to your liking. (North/Central)

No state income tax. Property tax isn't too bad. Small towns with conservative values.

Absolutely no restrictions on firearms (other than federal restrictions).

If the U.S. is not in consideration, I would say New Zealand is your best option. Australia is amazing as a geographic location. The people are great too. The government is below average at best.

Speaking as a U.S. citizen, we can always use intelligent people in the agriculture world.

I just can’t imagine why someone would want to flee the UK and then move to Canada/Australia/New Zealand?
All you would be doing is jumping out of the pot and into the fire! They are all the same when it comes to politics, regulations, and depriving their citizens of their rights!

Well, Australia, in spite of the great Outback, is one of the most urbanized populations on the planet. I love my visits to Africa, and particularly love Rhodesians - they speak the most perfect English on the planet. I might live there, but not my wife and children.

Have you considered Texas? God knows, everyone else seems to be coming here.

Maybe, Americans are naive to many things that that the rest of the world is aware of.

Here, we still have a few "States Rights", where the federal government CAN NOT override State rights.

All 50 States in the U.S. have the ability to establish there own laws regarding income taxes and restrictions on the ownership of firearms.

I'm just "guessing", now on income tax, but I think that the following have NO state income tax:

Alaska (Limited farming because of climate) - oil makes up for no income tax
Florida - expensive land, tourism makes up for no income tax
Tennessee - probably the least expensive land and and moderate climate - IDK what makes up for no income tax (maybe tourism???)
Wyoming (Limited farming because of climate) - oil makes up for no income tax
Nevada - Limited farming - gambling makes up for no income taxes
South Dakota - probably oil
Washington - I have no idea. Maybe oil, maybe, tourism...

I understand where you are coming from but the tax system is significantly better in Australia and New Zealand and the availability of hunting and firearms laws more relaxed (not in all of Australia). I don’t want to become a gun collector, it just looks increasingly likely that it will be difficult for me to hunt with my own rifle etc.

Education is a big issue as well. My children are at a great school now, but in a couple of years, they will need to move to either a terrible state school, where 40% of pupils are leaving with no qualifications or an excellent private school. The issue we have now is that from the start of this year, the government introduced a 20% tax on private education, which is paid after 40% income tax. This is pushing education beyond the limit of affordability. My old school closes this year after 430 years on the back of this.

If I was a single man, Africa would be too of the list. I am just nervous about taking my wife and children and even more worried about taking capital.

Thanks. I haven’t really thought about the US but we do have a relative who is in the process of moving to Wisconsin
