When showing off your new Elephant rifle goes wrong

At the risk of sounding like this is acceptable of which everyone will agree it is not...I have been in well over 100 hunting camps in North & South America not to mention 7 Safaris in the "Dark Continent" and alcohol was a part of 99% of them. Ive seen people that can handle themselves and those that could not. I have also seen on numerous occasions people drink themselves into a stuper at night and look pretty hairy the next morning getting ready for the hunt.
Rather than jump down his throat about how we all know the dumb things he did I choose to accept that he already knows that and take the rest of the story in context. Take a chill pill keyboard warriors lots of other battles to fight.

I have been on 3 African Safaris and hundreds of hunts in North America and alchohol was probably a part of every one of them for me personally once I reached legal drinking age…AFTER THE HUNT WAS DONE FOR THE DAY.

NOBODY is sitting around the Safari lodge in Africa with drinks handling loaded weapons...NOBODY.

NOBODY is having drinks at lunch then going out hunting on a Safari or Guided hunt in NA…NOBODY.

Jus sayin

You are comparing apples to oranges.

I mean that is kind of what i was thinking. I haven't been on near that many hunts, but I've been on several and that is pretty much the way it works. I kind of figured everyone would take it for the funny story it was. Was it a good idea no, in hindsight do I already know that, yes.
I mean call it inbred, or redneck, or whatever but the Skeet shoot/Bbq as we call it, which is usually a handful of guys with a cheap ass do all electric trap thrower cooking BBQ around a pit and shooting what would actually be more like trap than skeet, is a thing around here. I have been to no telling how many of them, from the time I was a kid until now. It just is what it is. Probably not a great format, but it just is a thing around here.
There is a firing line and a table. You put your guns on the table and you go hang.out around the BBQ pit. When you get ready to shoot you go pick up your gun go to the firing line and do your business then make sure your stuff is unloaded and put it back on the table. For better or worse them is the rules.

On the bright side at least I'm not the guy in the welcome and introduction section that suggested the Dark Continent was a derogatory term. He got 12 pages worth of responses.
I was just going to say "Don't count yourself out yet!". But Mike beat me to it.

That other post, strictly in my opinion, was also egotistical and ill conceived. Especially with a group that is largely fed up with all the Woke and PC BS. And this same majority of members have very romantic feelings of Africa and prefer to think of and remember her as mystical and mysterious and we don't like our ideals messed with.

Your actions go against all the common sense gun handling culture most of us fortunately grew up in. Everyone knows accidents happen... But mixing in alcohol prior to handling and shooting guns plus having kids present really just sets most of us off! Especially as you portrayed the incident as something funny and noteworthy.

I'm sure many if not most of us on this forum would be much more impressed if you were to go back to that range, with those same kids present, got them and the rest of your group together, stood up humbly and gave them all a heartfelt apology. Explain to those kids everything wrong with your action that day. Explain why it that was not ok, how fortunate everyone was to not have been hurt or killed, and apologize profusely again. Do that and you will gain back at least some respect in this group.

What if your "relaxed manner that only 12-15 coor's banquet beers can produce" causes you to forget to make sure your stuff is unloaded????

Just like your "most relaxed state" caused you not to grip the rifle well and caused your finger to slip from the front trigger to the rear trigger?

Honest Question (not meant to be inflammatory):

To all that have posted on this thread: Have you ever consumed alcohol and got behind the wheel of a vehicle?

The answer for me is: Yes.
This is something I do not condone now but, in my younger days, drinking and driving was an every-weekend thing. I am certainly not proud of this fact and, I thank God no one was injured or killed.

Every now and then I fall to my knees and thank a merciful God and all the Saints that I no longer have to work with engineers. :V Head Shot:

I resemble that remark. Thankfully I grew up on a farm. One grandfather was a farmer, the other a metal smith. They beat some practicality into my thick skull.

Yes.

Like you I'm not proud of it and sure as hell don't look back on it as a funny story worth a good laugh just because someone didn't get hurt.

We all make mistakes. Mistakes don't define us. It's how we react to those mistakes that defines us.

First time I fired a double I did the same thing. Stone cold sober with no alcohol around. I pulled the first trigger and the recoil had me pulling the second almost instantaneously. BOOM! BOOM! So it could happen to anyone, I guess.

Honest question

Do you now know it was wrong to drink and drive?

Do you still drink and drive?

I got a DUI 23 years ago. I know I was lucky not to have killed myself or someone else.

I don’t drink and drive anymore. I learned from my mistakes

Now compare my answer and what I hope your answers are to the author who thinks an accident with a gun while he was in a "relaxed manner that only 12-15 coor's banquet beers can produce" is funny, sees nothing wrong with what he did and still does it.

Can you not see the difference???

I have not been on anywhere near the hunts you have.

That said, the hunts I have been on. I have seen people drink around guides. Out in the field shooting while drinking. When you say "NOBODY does" that is not a true statement. In fact it happens alot. Just like drunk driving, it happens. The deal is most don't talk about it.

So we all have a choice to make, we all have different perspectives and personalities. I'm of the camp I can get through to someone with a conversation, get them to see it was probably not the best idea. With 1st hand information, not my ideas. If you can get to the point of a productive conversation you can actually have a chance at a change in a positive manner.

On the other hand you can call someone stupid and tell them they are wrong for said action. Unless you have a meaningful relationship with that person and know the way they are going to react. What comes out of that is animosity, once we get to that point what are the chances of a meaningful conversation? Out of spite they will hard pressed to see it your way.

OP said in hind sight was probably not a good call. That to me means next time in that situation he will probably have second thoughts. (Not meaning to put words in his mouth just reading the direction this thread as gone).

I have never met a person that did not wish they could have handled something differently. If someone does not feel that way, I want nothing to do with them.

Damn, you just really blew up any respect that was left....

I have had problems blow up when I drink and post on-line. But drinking and shooting or even handling guns... and with kiddos around, perhaps they were perfectly safe but is this really the type of example you want to set for them? Just please give that some sincere thought. With all the crap going on and the constant barrage of liberal garbage fed kids these days. The adults around them need to be, well adults.
Not even ONE DROP of alcohol is permissable when firearms are present, EVER!! That is about the stupidest example of assininity I have heard in a long time.

Let me know what outfitters allow clients to be out in the field drinking and shooting so I can avoid them.

Every outfitter I have ever hunted with or even talked to has it explictedly listed that alochol is to be limited in moderation and only after hunting is done.

None of them want a bunch of drunks up in the mountians shooting guns.

But maybe you found one that doesn't care. I can promise you that it isn't common to allow people to knock back 12-15 beers and go out hunting. Most say that once you have ANYTHING to drink you are done hunting for that day...hence the drinking is done around the campfire after the hunting is done for the day. It is usually in their hunt contract and on their FAQs on their website.

But yes...NOBODY is probably incorrect. Because I am sure that are at least a couple stupid outfitters. I just don't use them.

100%

I am just shocked at how many people try to make excuses for it being "Ok"

It does not good to list them. It's not my outfit nor my organization. I was a guest not a paying customer. You thinking it doesn't happen is like saying drinking and driving doesn't happen. I'm point out facts.

Just because it happened doesn't mean I condone it.

You should rename this now ridiculously epic thread: "Hello from Bwana Drunkee. Kentucky is NOT the "Corn Cracker State!"
Post of the month! :)

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.
