When showing off your new Elephant rifle goes wrong

I read where John Olin had a M21 built with chokes designed for the left barrel to be fired first. The idea was that since he was right handed the recoil would push the gun slightly into the shooter and make for faster recovery than if the right barrel was fired first which would have pushed the gun slightly away from the shooter. With this in mind it seems to me that pressing the rear trigger and firing the left barrel first would make sense.

I am not opposed to giving it a try. I have a pretty good supply of brass and bullets, and being new to the double rifle game I am definitely willing to try a few new techniques before I settle in on what's right for me. I think I will give it a try for sure.

Well I guess I am gonna put one more post here. OP sent me a PM telling me to slow my roll and that I'd better not make this personal or it would be "fucking personal from then on.”

There was nothing personal said. I stated facts and I stand by them. If @Backyardsniper doesn't like what I said that's his perogrative.

But I will pass on his offer to call him for a chat

As I suspected. You are a keyboard warrior, but you don't want to sit down for a chat.
I can understand if you don't like the story, I get that. Perhaps it is not kosher with everyone, it was meant to be funny, it was a funny story about things not going as planned.
I simply afforded you the opportunity to chat with me in person, or at least over the phone. If that doesn't interest you that's fine, but don't hurl insults on a keyboard and then act like I'm the one who is out of line when I send you my number and tell you we can talk.
The offer is still open. Feel free to call me, perhaps we will find we have more common ground than you think, although that seems unlikely at this point. Perhaps we agree to disagree and I simply don't respond to your posts and you don't respond to mine if you feel that strongly. That is after all want freedom is all about.

I teach Hunter Education for the state of Alaska. Everything about this pretty much sounds like some kind of 'how many mistakes can we identify' video.

Alcohol and firearms sounds bad enough. Kids around too? Way too much NoPe to go around.

Bro, that is not nice. There are still families out there.
If you had any clue whatsoever how many families are actually left without loved ones from stupid drunkenness, perhaps you would not be so offended that many members on here fail to find the humor in your story.
I have taken care of so many patients in ICU from “safe gun handling” being practiced whilst being intoxicated.
My son and I are alive by the grace of God after a drunk driver hit us and he was arguing with the cops that he was fine to drive and only had a few beers while they were trying to extract my 18 month old son and I out of my crushed car.
Make no mistake, there are members of this forum who never post and they are anti-gun and anti-hunting. They use stupid stories like this one to try to further their agenda.
I really hope lurkers and new members know that there are much higher caliber of members here than the example you are displaying.

This was really not that serious. I mean I don't feel the need to justify myself to a bunch of people on the internet, but Damn! I tell one funny story about shooting my new double rifle and now I am responsible for a bus crash killing 27 people and a mother and kid that got hit by a drunk driver. Hell, I had my wife drop me off and pick me up! Fine, you all win, I am a horrible person and I beg your forgiveness. Jesus Christ. I'm sure glad none of you all ever did anything in your lives that wasn't kosher, or maybe I'm just not afraid to admit it and tell the story when I do! I'll just stick to the classifieds.

Easy there Backyard. Maybe you should have first said "do not try this at home".

I will never forgive you for killing the 27 bus riders though.

Please stop and think about what you just said....

You knew you would be drinking so did the responsible thing and made arrangements to not drive.

How often have you heard the statement that letting someone who is drunk get behind the steering wheel is like handing them a loaded gun?

I hope you can see the point......

I had tried to stay out of this because in a previous post you had made very clear your disdain for any opinion I offered. I'll leave the beer and guns subject to others. If you can't recognize or at least understand how bad that looks to most then there is nothing I can add that will matter.

But in what world does a PM to another member, one who others do respect, that says he better "slow his roll" and that he had better not make this personal or it would be "fucking personal from then on" sound like a reasonable invitation to a conversation? No one here finds that to be mature behavior.

Look, no one asked you to be a part of this group. I think there are a lot of people here who would gladly help you along this double gun journey. But, we tend to be polite. We also tend to say what we think - usually based upon a lot of years of experience - hunting Africa, business, politics, and life in general. Quite a few of us actually know one another. Even then, we don't always agree. But we always respect an informed opinion. If you don't like some of those answers, going off on a bunch of "keyboard warriors" or "commissioned officer" attitudes is unlikely to gain you any respectful dialogue on any subject.

I'm pretty sure I have a great deal of "safe gun handling experience" I get what you are saying, but some of us grew up with the ability to drink a few beers and still have a little sense about us. I mean do you think we had kids out there running figure 8's around the target while we were shooting?
You have stated that you were 12-15 Coors into the day. That's not a few beers and clearly you were too drunk to shoot properly. Your safe gun handling experience is gravely flawed. Planning an event around drinking and shooting is a sign of very bad judgement.

That was a little over the top, but I am certain when Mahoney woke up on the morning of May 14th he did not intend to kill 27 people, he was just a good old boy that had a few too many. I pass that section of 71 every year going up to Camp Perry.

The point is certain things do not mix. We should all be responsible enough not to drink and driver or drink and handle firearms. Alcohol has no upside in those activities. I carry concealed everyday, but if I have one drink my pistol stays home. Even though accidents can happen with straight sober people that same incident becomes criminal when alcohol is involved.

While I cannot force my beliefs on others there are certain things that force me on my soapbox. This is one. Not a big fan of the purse comment or the PM to Royal, however it is likely we could have a drink together (I like good bourbon) and tell some hunting stories. I also own a Krieghoff in 470 Nitro.

Good luck going forward.

That's cool man, I get it. I did not intend to start a fire with that post. It was truly just intended to be a funny story. Obviously you are correct, and I do the same as far as my concealed carry, I agree if I'm gonna drink beer I leave that at home. I would indeed have a bourbon with you and we will leave the 470's at home ;)

This posting is not to address the behavioral aspects but I have some confusion regarding a post by @xausa . It was stated that if the bullet weight is doubled the recoil energy will quadruple. Since recoil of a firearm involves Newtonian rules physics the formula for the recoil energy is a variation of 1/2M.V2. As such a doubling of M only doubles the recoil and in the case of two shot fired in rapid sequence the total recoil energy would be the same, the difference being the absorbing of recoil from the first shot prior to the second.

I wouldn't hijack the thread but I recognize that there are several knowledgeable posters from whom I can get clarification of my confusion.

I was not offended by this story and see it for the silliness that it was. I have been shooting the rear trigger first on my double since I started shooting it. For me in the heat of the moment for the second shot its easier to reach the front trigger than the rear. Probably just not enough practice but now I'm comfortable with this approach and can fire two shots rapidly and accurately using this method.

I understand that you (OP) felt that you were simply sharing a funny story. A couple of points:

1) It is never funny or OK to mix alcohol and firearms. You may disagree, but I think you can see that the membership of this forum overwhelming align with this position.
2) As @Red Leg stated, this forum operates with a great deal of respect among members. It is never OK to call members out in the manner you have.

I truly hope that you take the feedback onboard.
