Whats a better scope than...

The $ always get in the way of obtaining good optics. I would suggest Leupold VX5 as a good option for you. I am done with QD rings (need to sell some) since my .375 has gotten off on me twice now. Once you lose confidence in something you are done.

Cheers everyone. The most likely option was that I'd stay with what I have.
No it has never let me down and any animals i have missed certainly havent been its fault but I did on one occasion struggle to see a red deer out spotlighting (legal here in NZ under certain conditions). It just washed out the red colour and couldnt make it out in the scrubby clearing. Not really an issue for what it is designed for.
Just wondering mainly in comparison to newer scopes. It is nudging 25 years old.
New ones have better coatings etc.
I am hearing you on the cheaper demo items that pop up but being in NZ we just dont see that. We are a bit small.
There is only 5 mill and change here and some of the stuff here gets a bit of a mark up to get landed

The only reasons I see for replacing the 1.5-5x L is for more magnification or to add an illuminated reticle. I’ve had several 1.5-5x, all with heavy duplex. They‘ve ridden on .308, .375 HH, .416 Ruger and .458 Lott. Never a failure (knock on wood). Illumination would be my only reason for upgrading and that will be a 1-6x Trijicon.

I do agree with the idea about a dot or illuminated reticule. I do like the concept of a Trijicon accupoint (never goes flat etc).
Been hearing some good things about the tract optics but bugger all of them around in NZ.
getting up there in price too once the exchange rate is factored in.

I have one L vx3 1.75-6x32, i used for a buffalo with a CZ550 458WM and now i would like sold

I see very clear with him but the ajustment of the reticle is very poor or small

I have a Leopold 3x9 that is 50 years old that is still used on my Savage 99 in 308. It admittedly is not as “bright” as newer scopes due to their better coatings but it is as clear or better than many new scopes. You really can’t go wrong with a Leopold. I also have a couple of Vortex scopes that I like very well. But not well enough to replace that 3x9.

I think you meant Leupold.

For around $1000.00 a vari x 5 by leupold is an excellent choice . The vari x6 and Swarovski are going to be a lot more.

( I have bought a fake Leupold, but it was a VX-3I 3.5-10x40)

You have a really good scope, not much DG gets shot at dusk or dawn. And what you have is still top shelf.

To go up in quality you go up in size/weight. The only things I prefer on my DG guns are Swarovski Z8i 1-8x24 or maybe the Schmidt and Bender Illuminated 1-8x24. Both are much bigger and heavier.

I have back up scopes for most rifles and they are pretty much 1.5-5x20 or 2.5x20 Leupolds.

@Philip Glass
Agreed, But I never succumbed to the QR/QD trendy thing so have no experience of a scope mount coming loose. I use very strong reliable mounts, usually dual dovetail, and carry a couple of these “hi tech” L wrenches with me. :) All my base and mount screws are hex or torx and are size 8. Never had to remove a scope in the field anyway for any reason. Couple of twists with the L wrench front and back and the scope comes off easily and quickly. And putting it back on with similar torque, re-sets it back to as close to zero as any finger lever- a miracle :)

Never had a decent Leupold mechanically fail. Gaining small fractions of glass quality for thousands of dollars difference never made sense to my budget. And never had a failure to harvest an animal because of those small fractions either.
