What Watch do you wear when you hunt?

I pick a watch for adventures and incorporate it into a daily photo, that represents something special, from that day. That way when I look at the watch and or photo, I am able too, in my mind’s eye, remember the event more clearly.

Today I found a watch strap maker Jean Russeau in Picadilly Arcade in London. They are making me a strap for my new Rolex Explorer out of buffalo hide, that will use the existing Rolex clasp. You get to choose the actual piece of hide they cut from, the degree of padding, the type of backing and the colour and style of stitching. This is the hide I chose:

I haven't worn a watch in my daily life for the last 25 years, or maybe longer. The mobile phone has taken over their function.

It's another matter when I'm hunting, fishing, in the woods, in the mountains, boating, riding an ATV or snowmobile. And it's not always convenient to use the phone there, it lies in a secure pocket, most often with a zipper, so as not to get lost.

And there it is easier to recognize the time in the old tried and tested way, for which ordinary hiking clocks are best suited. In my case, it's Casio G-Shock Mudmaster and Casio Pro Trek.

You know, there are so many threads about tipping vs not tipping, brake vs no brake, Hornady vs Nosler, Blaser vs everything else LOL.

Here is one I have not seen. Watches.... I am a huge watch lover. I was curious what do all of the AH.com crowd wear when on a hunt? I wore a Suunto Traverse Alpha on my last few hunts. I am so anti digital watches, I am a bit of a snob when it comes to watches. But I thought it would be great as it has a built in breadcrumb view via GPS. This allowed me to leave the GPS at home for my backpack hunts etc. But I quickly learned this watch "specifically designed" for hunting, was crap. When in normal watch mode the battery lasts forever. But in GPS mode which I assume everyone is using if they bought the "hunting" version. The battery hardly lasts 5-6 hours. So I am debating dumping this and going back to a good ole fashioned automatic watch. One where battery won't matter. And bring back my GPS which last for weeks in GPS mode.

Rolex Submariner. This watch has been with me since 1985 and has been on all my hunting trips. Very reliable and durable.

I posted this a couple of years ago, I still wear this watch, Original GMT Master over 1/2 the time. I have owned it for well over 30 years. Also have the original box and paperwork. It was purchased new in Hong Kong for the equivalent of $167 USD. It has been back to Rolex many times for service since I have owned it.

I collect automatic watches, the only thing I collect I guess. I Only own a few high end Swiss pieces. Most of mine are generic and designer swiss made watches (mostly ETA movements). And Japanese automatics. I own hundreds of those.

In Iraq and Afghanistan used a Jet Boil French Press during missions, just because we were outside the wire didn't mean we needed to be animals!

Finally got the nato strap I wanted from crown and buckle (had to wait for the brushed stainless hardware to come back into stock). I still haven’t hunted with this watch but it will get some hiking/snorkeling use this summer in Hawaii (I wanted something I could wear at the beach and was smart enough for church). I’ll also wear it when the fall hunting season starts up.

I’m very pleased with this watch. I love the classic field watch look and it has all the features I wanted (stainless case, Japanese solar, sapphire crystal, and 100m water resistance). The model I chose also has a textured dial which I love the look of. It reminds me of the dial detail you see on some Japanese watches like kuoe. My only real gripe was a somewhat mediocre, recycled-leather (eco ) strap which I was able to easily, and cheaply, replace with the exact color nato strap I wanted.

I think this watch has better specs (solar and rated water resistance) and appearance than a Hamilton field quartz at a quarter the price.
