What Watch do you wear when you hunt?

I passed on a Ti watch that was identical to the PO I currently have. It was in the store when my wife bought me this one, but I couldn't justify the up-charge for the Ti strap and case at the time. I consider it "the one that got away".

A hunter sharing a story here of how he became disoriented once returning to his truck, and a relative buying him an SGW-100 afterwards, is what inspired me to pick this up.

All sounds can be silenced, good backlight, and a compass is always handy in the woods. A few colors available that are darker/don't include the metallic bezel.
I’ve had mine for about a year now as a work/field watch.

It’s been hunting in Arizona and California and swimming in pools, jacuzzis, and Mission Bay. It’s hiked over 9,000’ ridges in the eastern sierras and around upstate New York. It’s survived daily use on construction sites, brake jobs, and yard work.

Most importantly it’s survived me constantly banging it into walls by accident. ;)

Still no scratches on the crystal, which I attribute to the raised bezel.

The compass is so-so. I’d probably skip it and add a button compass to the strap if I needed one.

All in all I think it’s a very good watch. Plus it is green, which I like. I don’t love the black on black so many Casios have.

Casio G-Shock or Pro Trek will be your best bet, these watches come in variety of case sizes and colors, lightweight and very durable. If you want to go analog, Citizen Promaster Land AT6085-50E or BN0118-04E “Ray Mears .

I’m not big on dive-style watches. They’re too chunky and flashy for my taste. I don’t care for bracelets either.

Because of that, I’d been looking into field-style watches in the Hamilton khaki vein. The smaller size and plainer appearance appeals to me.

I had been considering the 36mm, solar model from Vaer (the Korean War model if you want look it up) but stumbled across the timex expedition north line. At one point I had considered the citizen eco drive field watch but was turned off by the mediocre crystal and reputation for being a scratch magnet and that’s where the timex came in.

This model is 36mm, has a stainless case, a seiko solar movement, and a sapphire crystal. It’s also rated to 100m. A lot of features for the $90 price tag at jomashop.

I plan to wear it on a nato strap but it also came with a decent leather strap with quick detach bars.

I’ll add some more photos and impressions when I’ve had a chance to put it through its paces a bit more.

Apparently, the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona is "The Watch" to wear when touring prisons in El Salvador.

Nice watch. Granted, it isn’t as nice as the sports car I have seen pictures of Bernie Sanders driving; but still a nice watch.

Everybody wants a hunting field watch until it comes time to do hunting field watch shit. Shot the slam on Saturday in the NTTD.

The real crime here is that’s a big watch even by men’s standards and chronographs are one of the least useful complications on a watch plus on a Daytona the pushers are screwdown so it’s doubly useless unless you run around with them unscrewed all the time. Maybe she was taking her split times walking the yard/blocks.

In other news I picked up an 80s era Sandoz Diver in Hong Kong on vacation for $200. Sandoz was one of the Swiss brands killed during the quartz crisis and I’ve always had a soft spot for their Submariner homage. This one’s been rebuilt a few times and the crystal bezel and crown are replaced. I might try to find a correct crown and cut a new stem for it. It’s also missing its gaskets and the bezel needs aligned but that’s no biggie. These seem to be getting harder to find and I’ve owned a few over the years with most coming from that area of the world. ETA 2824 movt so it’ll easy to source parts for and work on. Lots of watches in HK everything from high end luxury to budget and lots of clones and fakes mixed in a very buyer beware market but also the most diverse watch culture I’ve ever seen.

Currently wearing a DHgate Coke gmt master 16710 I’ve been tinkering with. Neither are “hunt qualified” lol. I wore the Aqua Terra I posted before throughout the trip and into the ocean a few times.
