As the title suggests what was the intended quarry of the .360 No2? It’s a heavy form deliver bullet at 320gr doing 2200fps (iirc) so should have good penetration on the big stuff. But Hunter regards it too light for the big stuff.
It’s one of 4 calibers I’d be happy to have a double in any day.

Cheers,
Troy.

A little bit less that a 318 WR or 333 Jeffery Rimmed - or rimless - so usual suspects - I have hunted with a 318WR and taken plainsgame from springbok thru blue wildebeest - would I take a body shot with on on a giraffe - yep if it was the gun in my hand and did have solids - Did put a second shot into a blue - centre chest - (solid) front to back breaking everything - and left the scene !

It is certain that such cartridges are very marginal for DG hunting, but very comparable cartridges like the 9,3x74R or the 9,3x62 are it also. The last two were also primary designed for hunting heavy game in Europe and only later they find the way to Africa, above all for hunting PG, which is what the absolute majority of the colonists at that time did.

Stags in Europe.

Chital, Sambar, Nilgai, Tigers, and Leopards in India.

Back in the day when it was introduced it would have been used for all sorts of dangerous game as the 7x57,303 and various 6.5's were used for everything if that's all you had and there were no caliber restrictions at the time.

Bengt Berg wrote it was ready made as the best bear cartridge he had come across . When he were after Asian bear or bear the .360 nr 2 set was what he had on his Simson action then .

Hi,

Looking at the 360 NE Nr 2 vs the 9,3x74 the former has significantly greater case capacity than the later. Loading both at same pressure levels, safe for rather old double rifles platforms, the 360 Nr 2 should have some more velocity, all other factors the same.
Have anyone here experience loading the 360?

Thank you!

CF

I had a WW Greener 360No.2 double for a while.
It is much larger in case capacity than the 9.3X74R or 400/360 which are very similar.
The 360 No.2 is really a 450/400 3” necked down to .366”
I reloaded for my Greener and iirc I used 76gr of H4831 (320gr Hawk bullets) which I think was the same powder and charge as in my 404 Jeffery but I’d need to look that up.

This rifle is surely a 360 2-1/4” or a 360 No.5
The 360 No.2 was invented in 1908 (I think) and is certainly too much for a Rook sized rifle to handle.
I agree on this ^^ .

I have a Westley Richards in .400/360NE & wondered the same, I only have a bunch of boxes of factory Kynoch 314gr Solids, if this wasn’t intended for DG why the extra heavy solids, not the best on Any PG ?

Taylor raved on the .400/350NE but not .400/360NE speaking poorly of it but it is near identical in performance ?

I however don’t believe a lot of what he wrote !

Hello! I saw your post from last year about a missing crate from your hunt in Moz. I am curious how that all turned out? We (my fiancé and I) also hunted in Moz in 2024 and the trophies are being shipped with Hunters Services Limitada. We have some concerns on whether we will get the trophies home or not. May I ask who you hunted with?
