Need a RMR type 2 for my 470 NE and an Elephant and possible buffalo hunt in October- what dot size do you prefer?

The 6.5 is just a bit too fat and not necessary to be that big. The 3.25 version I think is perfect for more typical DG distance. Big enough you'll find it quickly, but small enough to still make a precise shot. Shooting to 100 yards or beyond it is a bit too big, but that's not what you're doing.

The 1 MOA version would be just a bit small and less quick to pick up at close range but would be better for longer shots. But that's not you application here.

i use a burris fast fire 3, other phs that work for me all 3 use burris fast fire 3.......

Select the smallest dot available on a reflex sight. Aim small, hit small (groups).

Why? As the dot is adjusted for brighter conditions such as in Africa, the size of the dot increases.
I've shot competition with Aimpoint H1's on pistols and have Trijicon SRO's on my double rifles.
A 1 MOA dot will only appear as 1 MOA at dawn and dusk. Otherwise, the intensity of the dot must be increased to see it. My 1 MOA dot usually cover 3 MOA on a 100 yard target when practicing.

Aimpoint offers 2 MOA dot as their smallest. Aimpoint sights' dots flare less than do my Trijicon or Holosun dots so their 2 MOA isn't much larger than what my astigmatism.

Older eyes ofter suffer astigmatism that makes the dots appear as blobs rather than circular. The blobs will be larger than what younger eyes see in a circular dot.

On a personal defense carry pistol usually employed a 2 to 7 yards, a 6 MOA dot may be practical.

MOA dot size explained.

The dot stays the same size because it never moves relative to the eye looking at it. The target size will change in relation to how close it is to the eye.

This means a 1 MOA dot covers ~1” at 100 yard, ~1/2” at 50 yards and ~1/4” at 25 yards. As the target moves closer, the dot appears to get smaller but in reality is exactly the same size while the target has “grown”.

Some people find it difficult to pick up the dot with smaller MOA sizes and choose a slightly larger size. In general a larger dot is better for closer shooting but will not afford the best accuracy at longer ranges. Smaller dots cover less area at longer ranges giving better accuracy but may be hard to find for some in a stressful situation.

Mounting the optic as far forward as possible on the firearm will allow the user to keep the best possible peripheral vision which is important for both DG and defensive shooting.

The biggest thing is to practice. PRACTICE, PRACTICE and more PRACTICE! Development of muscle memory and proper sight picture will yield the best possible outcome when the chips are down.

Personally, I like the closed emitter design of the AimPoint T2 with the 2 MOA dot. Legendary reliability and durability along with top quality performance. I voted 1 MOA because it’s the closest to what I prefer and I’d easily choose it over the other options.

I have 3 RMRs all 3.5 Have been using for awhile. One on my turkey gun, one on a favorite 44 and the last on a 416 Rigby. Never found any to be too big. Yes 100 yds is covering up more then 1 moa but I am not shooting 1 moa groups but 3.5 minute of Buffalo is what I want.
As stated practice practice etc builds the confidence.

I too voted 1 MOA. I have a 1 MOA on a 45-70 bear defense rifle and it is easy for me to pick up and pick up quick. I have it mounted farther back on the receiver and I’ve “practiced” picking it up with an UNLOADED rifle at a charging black lab :) I like it. Besides using a defense gun, I did want the gun able to be used at 100 yards and it works well at 100 yards.

I have a 3.25 on my daughters .410 turkey gun. It works very well for turkeys and is easy to pick up quick as well. We’ve even shot clays with it

And finally I have the smaller pistol version on a handgun, 6 MOA. It is a lot harder to pick up because of how you hold the pistol. It’s definitely taken some practice to pick up the dot based on how the pistol is held.

I only have Trijicon RMRs, but I’ve been VERY happy with their durability and their size

My .470 came with the 3.25 MOA RMR and I was worried it'd be too big, but ended up really liking it. Instantly pick it up, and more than precise enough for 75 yard shots.

I have numerous red dots. Aimpoint H1 and Acro, vortex Sparc, Leupold Deltapoint, as well as Leupold fire dots riflescopes. The red dots range from win size from 2 MOA dots to 7.25? MOA triangle on one of the deltapoints.

On pistols, carbines, shotguns and rifles I have never wished for a larger aiming point, only smaller. The red dot is so easy to see I would go for the smallest available. I do not find the larger dots significantly easier to see, it simply varies with brightness. As someone mentioned, adjust the brightness so it grabs your eye for the conditions and go hunting! I do not have an RMR but I would go 1 MOA.

How do you like the ACRO? I assume it's on a Glock.

It’s fantastic. I actually put it on a 223 carbine to replace the VX6 1-6 HD I put on my R8 375 barrel.
