What Quad Sticks Are You Using?

After using a set in South Africa I bought a set of the Nordiske Precision 4 legged shooting sticks. I bought them over the stable sticks due to the strap in between front and rear.

my PH had those and I could never get used to them, I guess my sense of balance is not that good now but the tri-pod sticks work better as I can put forward pressure on them and seems to make me more stable

I view the strap as more of a negative than positive. It’s on Gunstix too. I’ve never had 4 stable sticks open so far I thought it would add value. It is something to hang up on brush though.

I would be the opposite on that view.
The strap does keep them from opening up to far.
We did not experience it getting caught up in the bush.

While preparing for this last trip one we had a range day. We all brought sticks.
One of the guys brought the stable sticks. Admittedly his balance was not the best when he took the shot with his 416. But the sticks did open up with recoil.
I decided to take my trigger stick tripod, but never used it.
One of the others took his bog pod and never used it.

Guess that is why they make so many different shooting sticks, something for everybody.

I could see that. I’ve developed a shooting style that works very well for me. I only shoot with sling and hold the front two sticks with sling instead of the forearm of the gun. This way the gun will always stay on the sticks during recoil but more importantly gives me a lot of mobility compared to holding the forearm. I stop at 375 with this method though. I use a tripod with my 458.

Being French, I started with the 4Stablestics. It improved my results but I found its legs were too thin and thus it was not steady enough.

Later I bought a Viper-flex, with the 5th extra leg. I prefer it over the 4SS. It is definitely more steady but heavier an cumbersome too. I have never tried the one from Blaser.

The Blaser sticks have the little strap that can be removed. It is good for placing the rests in the right position length wise and as long as you set up over the sticks, meaning set up the fronts for a quick shot than draw back the rear for extra support if needed. Dryfire practice is the key to success with quad sticks, watching those who don't practice looks like they are screwing an octopus.

The all carbon fiber version is the way to go. Very easy to carry at 900 grams and won't chill your hands in the cold like aluminum will.

Another FYI: -without the front stabilizing legs
Gunstix: 32.5 in retracted, just over 2 lbs (no exact weight listed)
Viperflex: 35.8 in retracted, 1.98 lbs
Blaser: 48.8 inches, 2.17 lbs

The Viper-Flex Pro To Go can be taken apart (not just collapsed) to 26" for travel in a compact case like a Pelican 1700.

Used these Nordiski last hunt and liked them. I am an old guy with balance issues and they worked fine for me. Tripod sticks have more freedom of lateral movement.

I missed the "To Go' pair... I was just giving some info on size. I thought the carbon fiber vs. aluminum would have been a bigger difference. The Gun Stix are aluminum but have a lever lock not a twist lock (I don't use my Bog Pod because of the twist lock) I also like the front swivel head on the Blasers. Just thought I'd throw more data into the fray.
Like Bandera said "Guess that is why they make so many different shooting sticks, something for everybody."

LOL. Yeah, something for everyone.

I still have and use three sets of BOG-POD sticks. The original is a RLD-3 with the twist locks and some years later I picked up two sets of the Adrenaline (one tripod and one bipod) that have the lever locks. They are useful for different kinds of hunting, mostly from a blind where I don't have to carry them. I do find the new Adrenaline sticks to be an improvement over the RLD's in almost every way.

I've never had the twist locks on the RLD-3 slip on me, knock on wood. And the both of the Adrenaline sticks have proven their worth. But for a stalking hunt, I really want the Viper-Flex. They are quieter, lighter, pack down smaller and most importantly, I'm more accurate when shooting from them.

On our last trip to Africa, our PH had Trigger Sticks but couldn't get them to deploy properly or and the legs wouldn't lock in place. The fine dust and sand combined with the abuse of normal use was just too much for the mechanism. At the end of our trip he was trying to assemble a working set from at least two (possibly three) sets of sticks. We were very happy that we had brought our own and used them on nearly every shot we took. After that experience, I wouldn't travel to a hunt and not bring my own sticks.

I just saw Budsgunshop.com has both the guide gun and the African for $1150. FWIW - I bought both and decided to use the Guide gun - I restocked it in a Bell and Carlson stock and I added the Alaska arms floor plate to add a round. I wanted the shorter barrel as I will use a suppressor. I wont go lower than $1100, but I will ship it and no sales tax.

Let me know if you are interested
