What is your most memorable African Hunting moment?

Having to back up a wounded Leopard, with a scoped .270 Win at night. My only source of light was the tracker next to me, holding a 2x AA battery Mag-light.
You feel alive and dead at the same time.

o_O....sheeeit marius rather you than me!!

I would have say that the most memorable moment was waking up in Africa the first morning. I did not think for the world that I would ever be able to fullfill a childhood dream to hunt in Africa. The problem I now have is, I can't stop thinking about that morning.

Yeah @spike.t , certainly my most memeroble moment but certainly NOT my favourite moment.
We can laugh about it now....

yeah was never in the military and only been in 4 leopard follow ups , but i would imagine the feelings are similar to knowing you are walking into an ambush......3 we found dead after a bit but in very thick bush or long grass, and the 4th luckily could only growl before it was finished off. as you say it can be memorable.....and a :E Big Grin: when its over. oh and i am glad i was carrying something better than a scoped .270 !.....mmm just remembered only had a .308 with fixed power 6x42 scope on one of those, so not that sensible either :D

The .270Win was the least of my worries. It was the tracker holding the 2 AA Mag-Light, that worried me the most. If he went, I was in total darkness.

stepping on a puff adder or cobra in the dark wouldn't make your day

I think my most memorable time in Africa is my next one. Tied for second would be deciding which crease on the trunk of a angry charging cow elephant I needed to hit at 60 yds. (her 3rd charge) and seeing a black rhino revived that we spotted for the Rhino ops team, or watching three African wild dogs drinking at the waterhole 50 yds away while I was eating lunch.

Kman that elephant charge would get anyone's heart racing. Cool picture of the wild dogs.

and likely get another bodily function moving

Yes. we had driven by a herd of about 30 elephants and she peeled off the back side and began chasing the vehicle at full speed. We drove about 400 yds, paused and she was still coming. we drove about a mile and stopped and got out, thinking we were clear. I heard brush snapping, yelled, "she's coming" and jumped back in the truck. She was 8 yds away when we got moving. we went another 1/2 mile, got out and got the guns. The P.H. said, she cannot be allowed to chase vehicles, thinking she wins, get ready. The last time she turned away on her own at 40 yds. It was her lucky day. You are right about the bodily function, the "game scout" with his A.K. had to go back and change his clothes. I did not get shaky until about an hour later at camp. Drove by the same herd 2 days later and she behaved herself. Can you see the radio collars on the dogs?

Getting out of the charter plane and having my feet touch the dirt airstrip in Zimbabwe, Zambezi Valley for the beginning of a buffalo hunt. From that moment forward everything else was a bonus. I had done something I truly thought I'd never do.

Royal I think that is part of the common thread here......realizing that you are doing something that you never thought you would do!

Kinda takes "it is all about shot placement" to a whole new level.... :A Banana Sad:

Marius, please tell us how you got into that predicament, there must be more to the story?

Ditto! I think it has to be a good story.

Most memorable moment will always be waking up to the sounds of the lions, leopards and hyenas just beyond where I was sleeping. And the white rhino who walked toward me after my sable hunt.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
