What do you carry your ammo in when on safari?

I carry 2 x 5 round ammon wallets made by El paso in South africa. 5 Softs, 5 solid/woodleigh hydro or a mixture depending on the day. So thats 10 rounds plus 4 in gun, it's enough

I think culling belts are just for look etc, and rounds fall our when you have to leopard crawl or when you dump it back on the chunting vehicle etc, plus they look stupid on a client, meant for the PH who get you needs to get you out of trouble. If you need more ammo get another few more ammo wallets and give it the head tracker to carry in his backpack with your extra water.
Well on my last Safari in June, I was hunting buffalo, the last 130 yards was on my hands and knees. I did not loose a single cartridge out of my culling belt. Never lost a round getting in and out of the truck.

I use the Murray Leather culling belt. First rate craftsmanship.

Going on my first plains game hunt in April 2026. Here's what I plan on using.

Push feed and extra magazine. wham-bam, reloaded. YMMV.

Leather cartridge case on belt. I've tried the case on the sling but it just gets in the way. I also keep a box of ammo in the truck, just in case

@Hunter-Habib that photo of you completely blows my theory on PHs! I've maintained the older the PH, the shorter the shorts. You must be young at heart!

On my recent hunt in Namibia, I asked Nick Nolte how cold does it have to get before a PH will put on long pants. Nick told me that when it's really cold, he just puts on a second pair of shorts. :ROFLMAO:

Mom calls me a big baby in a 73 year old body…

But in all seriousness, I mostly wear long trousers… even on Safari. My loving daughter-in-law actually gifted me this pair and I wanted to show her how much I appreciated her gift.

uncle mikes elastic belt slides work fine.

On DG I use a Murray Custom belt with elastic loops, I would’ve gone with leather loops but I change out between .416 Rigby and .375 Ruger.
On a Plainsgame safari I use a Browning belt slide wallet. I also use the wallet for my hunting here in the states. I have several, one for .338 WM, one for 7mm RM and one for .375 Ruger. The wallets are 100% leather.
When the wallet is opened I load from the top row that is held in place by the belt , don’t like the slop in the bottom row.

Do you use the cartridge belt, a snap cover ammo pouch, or the ubiquitous "Federal Freebie" plastic ammo holder? Or something entirely different?

I used to use a culling belt but I didn’t like it, ammo falls out. I now use a slider on a belt or a pouch, depending on if DG or non-DG ammo. Els leather probably makes the nicest ones, Dick Murray makes great ones too.

I have used culling belts at times but for a regular hunt I use these cartridge slides by Murray. I greatly prefer the ones with elastic sewn in to keep from getting that green verdigris on brass cartridges. They will soak up a lot of sweat and transfer that to your cartridges otherwise.

I also use Murray cartridge slides with elastic cartridge loops. Additionally I carry a cartridge in each pocket.

I also carry one in each pocket so they don't make noise.

Can’t beat Murray Leather. Murray belt, C2 slide and Leatherman pouch. Made in Texas. Dick is a great guy.

For up to .375 I have two C2 6 round leather shell holders from Murray Custom Leather. Don't buy the ones with the silly flaps on top! For my double I use the Trader Keith culling belt. When you get to the larger and heavier big bore ammo the leather belt shell holders are terribly uncomfortable. The leather culling belts look great and are an heirloom type of item but they lack the comfort of the light weight Trader Keith belt.
I like the silly flap. But only because the loose rounds were banging around in my fanny pack.

What's the one animal 'you just have to take' on your safari? Enjoy the process, sometimes I think I enjoy packing, unpacking, repacking, more than the actual hunt! lol

Its been a long time dream to hunt and take a "Grey Ghost." The Kudu is an impressive and beautiful animal.
