Just finished Horn of the Hunter by Robert Ruark. I really like his writing style. I’m now alternating between Ruger & His Guns by R.L. Wilson and The Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan. It’s the untold story of those who survived the Great American Dust Bowl in the 1930s. A brutal existence for those that experienced and lived through that time.

I’m in the latter chapters of “ The River of Doubt” it’s about Theodore Roosevelt’s journey in the Amazon basin in 1914.
Not sure of the author or the exact title but it’s a pretty interesting read.

Great book, Teddy had an awfully exciting life!

I find this ludicrous that Canada did this ! History and historical vernacular should not dictate censoring, but I am becoming increasingly convinced that I’m becoming obsolete ?

Very few people have studied any history, so they have no sense of the world or it cultures before they became aware of it. Inevitably, they then judge historical events by the norms of their particular culture and contemporary society - judging the past by norms of the present. It is hard to imagine a more arrogant exhibition of sheer ignorance.

If I remember correctly you used to have a quote as your signature along the lines of “ the past is a foreign country they do things differently their”

I was given a copy when I was in my teens, and it is what began my fascination with the Middle East. That eventually led to the Defense Language Institute for Arabic, Foreign Service Institute for Arabian Peninsula Dialect, and a fellowship at the Walsh School, Contemporary Arab Studies, Georgetown - and a lot of time mucking around the Arab World.

I can't imagine why it would be on some sort of restricted list.

Internet Archive was sued by 3 publishing houses and lost, so some books are restricted to impaired people only.

I thought this was a very good book! Anyone that has spent anytime in Mozambique should enjoy it.

While in Africa, finished up Out In The Midday Shade: Memoirs of an African Hunter 1949-1968 in the Sudan and Kenya, and recently The Gun That Made the Twenties Roar for gun guys interested in the Thompson. Now enjoying one that @Trogon sent, It Shouldn't Happen, wild tales of a PH in Zimbabwe.

"And No Birds Sang" by Farley Mowat.
It's a memoir of the author's WWII experiences with the Canadian army in Sicily. A departure from his usual books on animals and the Arctic.
Sometimes graphic, sometimes somber, not a lot of glory, but I think does a good job of explaining the realities of the day.
