Hunting reports
Africa

One of the prior threads about the hunting the Big 5 had me thinking hunting goals and bucket list hunts. I’d like to complete my dangerous 7 by the age of 50 and spend my 50th in Africa with my family hunting that last specie. Probably rhino, currently 3 of 7 complete. If another hunt doesn’t derail plans, figuring 2 species per safari, lord willing this should be relatively readily accomplished.

What else is on the list? What else are true bucket list hunts?

For me water buffalo and banteng in Australia, a Marco Polo ram and mid Asian ibex, and a Lord Derby Eland.

I’d like to make it back to Alaska for a big brown bear and Kamchatka Peninsula for a moose.

I’ll continue to hunt mid west whitetails and sprinkle in a few hunts in the states.

What do your hunting dreams look like?

Finished the last one that was truly a long dreamed of quest not quite two years ago when I finally took a Capercaillie in the Austrian Alps hunting him traditionally at dawn.

My bucket list doesn’t involve specific species… it is tied to specific locales..

I want to hunt all 6 inhabited continents…

After we hit New Zealand in April we’ll have 5 of them knocked out…

In either 2026 or 2027 we’ll pick an Asian country out and that “list” will be complete…

Then I want to expand my European hunting experiences.. I’d love to return to Spain for a hunt.. and maybe hit a few Central European places on hunts as well..

I also want to venture out on more western states in North America… I don’t care what game we’re pursuing… I’d be equally happy with pronghorn, elk, moose, mountain lion, or muley… I just want to spend more time in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Utah, etc etc than I have in previous years…

I turkey, deer, and duck on the regular….

My list:

Mule deer-going this year and next
Elk-going 2027
Cape buffalo, large kudu, duiker, klippy
Big whitetail somewhere
Canadian whitetail
Canadian moose
Caribou
Antelope
Black bear
Beceite ibex
Asian ibex
Archery elk
…I want to follow the ducks from Canada on down and hunt for 3-4 months straight
…would like to hunt Africa for a month long excursion

I love this thread- this is mine- copied and pasted from my notes. My goal is to check a few off and add a few every couple of years but these are the main ones. I have been chasing a monster whitetail for years and just haven’t been able to get it done.

Mule Deer
170+ whitetail
Ibex
Brown bear- July 25
Red Stag
Marco Polo
Moose
Lechwe 2026
Waterbuck 2026
Black impala

I really need to finish this leopard that's been hanging over me for years...finish T10...roe deer in Europe (several countries)...ibex in Asia...a bigger pronghorn if I can pull the right tag in NM...and there are always more bears in Canada and buff/ele in Africa and probably more stag in Argentina (going next month).

I'm really trying to resist the urge of the higher end spiral horns in Africa. I've been able to ignore the sheep slam but the spiral horns have a loud siren call. I could start on them if I stopped hunting DG but that's my fav kind of hunting. First world problems and I'm grateful to be hunting!

We’re headed back to Romania this year for the fixed price stag hunt up on the Hungarian border. I’d like to schedule a further hunt to pursue a truly monster stag in the Carpathians along with a Carpathian Chamois. The monster fallow are also keenly interesting.

It’s probably not fair to call it bucket list as I’ve shot literally hundreds, if not thousands, of wild upland birds, but I intend to return to my roots, and focus on upland hunting across the breadth of NA.

That's a great goal. I share it.

My list for the next few (5) years goes like this-

-Fallow Deer and fly fishing in New Zealand w/ New Zealand Safaris
-Red Stag and Roebuck in Romania w/ Huntromania
-Crock and Hippo in Zim w/ Tokoloshe Safaris
-Eland, shark fishing, and touring Namibia w/ Khomas
-Sable in Zambia w/ Takeri (full time retirement gift)

Other stuff to do along the way-
-Waterfowl and upland bird hunting any where...(very possible trip to Argentina)
-Cape Town and touring the southern end of South Africa w/ pg hunting along the way
-South Dakota Bison
-Anything else thats fun and fits into the schedule...

WAB - I'm headed to Romania in late October. Will be hunting chamois in Retezat Mountains, and bear in as of yet unknown location as we are waiting for 2025 licenses. Much appreciate if you share some of your experiences on the hunt - or point me to an old post. Curious about the hunt, what you brought, where you stayed, and any other details you think are pertinent. Many thanks, Sir.

Happy to help, I did post a hunt report that should be relatively easy to find. I am also happy to visit if I can be of help. PM if so.

Red Lechwe is at the top of my list on my next trip to Africa BUTT...

This September and October will be with Marius at HuntRomania for the big Stags just north of Bucharest and Chamois for Tina.

I’m headed to the Selous this summer for 2 buff on my first safari ever (a major bucket list for me). Next up would be the Niassa for buffalo and followed by another trip to Kodiak island for a big bear.

My bucket list is largely unfilled, and will probably stay that way:

LDE and Buffalo in Cameroon
Bongo in CAR
Leopard in Mozambique over hounds
Elephant in Namibia
Kafue Lechwe on the Kafue flats
Mountain lion in Arizona
Trophy bull elk
Tahr in New Zealand
Red Stag in Europe
Ibex preferably in Asia, but Spanish type would do.
A successful grouse hunt (they are rare here)

I dropped sheep hunts from the list because of difficulty and expense not seeming to weigh out against the experience gained.

My bucket list mainly involves Canada and Alaska. I have hunted New Zealand twice, Africa four times, and Europe. I will be in Spain this April and Namibia next year. My goal has been to travel overseas while still able to make the long trips.

My list: Moose, Caribou, Brown Bear, Bison, Muskox, Mule Deer, Wolf, Blacktail Deer, Antelope, and Mountain Lion.

I would like another elephant bull and a Marco Polo. Those are the two main hunting goals I hope to achieve before I die.

Some other goals are Cape buffalo, Spanish ibex, red stag and fallow in Europe. And to draw as many tags in the western US as I can. And to kill ad many big white tails as I can

My list:

North America:
B&C Elk
B&C Pronghorn
Rocky Mountain or Desert Bighorn

New Zealand:
Tahr

Africa:
Grant's
Thomson's
Lessor Kudu
Gerenuk
Rowland Ward Buffalo
Nyala - only if I have to make another trip to try again for a RW Buffalo, if not successful this year.

Europe:
Alpine Ibex

Leopard, Romania for stag, Portugal for stag, Austria for ibex, mountain lion and stone sheep in B.C.
I've done a pile of bear (browns and black) hunts but would do another of either if my brother pulled the trigger on a trip.
