Well, look what I found

Got yourself a very nice looking Model 70. Congratulations. Enjoy your find as soon as you can. One of those nice AZ Mulies would make a good start.

Congrats on that find! Wood looks good

It's going straight to Wayne for the .404J conversion, so it won't see any mule action. Got a .300WM for that anyway.

Congrats.

Welcome to the club. ;)

looks like a great find, I have grabbed several used Rifles from Cabelas at good prices the last one being my Rem 35 Whelen

So I'll recap the thread:

1.) "I want a pre-64 Winchester"

The general sentiment:

2.) then later the OP said: "I bought a post 64 instead"

3.) But then out of the jaws of defeat he utters "but I'm immediately going to build it as a custom 404 Jeffery"

And the thread went:

Going from a 300RUM to a 404J sounds like an upgrade to me; rebarrel & a slight increase in the bolt face and you should be good-to-go.

Once the conversion starts, keep us informed how it's going with pics if available. Congratulations!

Absolutely! Congrats on a .404J. Hope my humor was taken in the jest, lighthearted as was intended @PHOENIX PHIL

Looking forward to the final build. Also curious to hear about ammo. I just started researching the advantages of 450gr bullets but want to hear your range reports!

Congrats Phil, it will turn out wonderful!.

phil good to see you rescuing a rifle from a life of despondency :A Banana Sad: after being created in one of those horrible ultra whizzbang things :A Up To Something::A Stirring: , and turning it into a very happy rifle in a proper calibre :D Beers:

Thanks Mike. Absolute worst caliber I've ever owned was a .300RUM, so yes taking it away from that feels proper. Going to play with this a little to make it fit my wife properly and perhaps a recoil reducer in the stock, see if we can get her shooting it someday.

sounds like a plan....at least you can say you were thinking of her when you bought it ;). recoil reducer should work...it seems to tame down my 500 jeff a bit :) but as its the only one i have shot.....mind you @bluey thought different after his first shot:E Shocked: :E Rofl:but he did get a lot better by shot no 3 :E Big Grin:

OK, now you are telling us you bought it for your wife!....Sure....

Well if I tell myself that enough, it might make it true...(y);)

Seriously I am going to do what I can to make it as recoil friendly as I can. Proper recoil pad, perhaps the mercury tube and a good 400gr bullet at a nice leisurely 2200fps seems the ticket. All Donna can talk about is the Gemsbok she missed with her .30-06 (which is my fault as I did not check the action screws and found out after we got home was the issue) and going back for it and others. I've created a monster!
