Well it's offical!

and on the eighth day , god looked down upon his planned paradise , and decided he needed a provider .
so the good lord made us hunters,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

For shooting sticks you can check with Cabelas, they carry several brands. I have used both Primos and bog-pod. You can also make a set with three long dowl rods, bambo, etc and either use some rubber tubing or old boy scout lashing techniques.

I have all ready gotten the quote from my taxidermist for what I intend on hunting and yeah, I have a seperate taxidermy fund. And I will not be using the "F word" if I want to come home!

I have a T-shirt I wear that makes me feel better after a hunting trip that I have used the "F word" on. It says...It is easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission. Hope it helps in future decision making. R.

...Out of curiosity how does it do when the bullet meets the bone?

Well it doesn't slow down much, that's for sure. :D Eland piled up on the spot, as did others. My blue Wildebeest did manage to buck like a stampede bronk for about 80yds or so before going down, they are tough. Kudu ran over 100 before falling as well. Everything else was thoroughly impressed and wished they had never seen one. :D

I found the Lapua did less damage to hide and meat than the .257 WBY and handled the big stuff as well as you would expect a 210gr bullet at 3150fps to do... lights out!

I do hand load quite a bit, so I'd be very interested in what loads you have worked up for both PG and DG since you know I have to go back for a buffalo!

Happy to do so. Shoot me an email, my address is in my signature and I'll email you what I've got.

You should look at the new 300gr offerings. I know a lot of .338L shooters who are extremely happy with their performance on game.

Guys I'm preparing for my first hunt in Africa as well and found this thread very helpful.

It's been in the planning for almost five years but I had to put it off three consecutive years in a row due to a couple of othopedic surgeons who needed some practice time HA!

Clock is now down to 12 days and counting.

A Winchester model 70 .375 H&H, I know it's big for plains game but it's the only bolt gun I need to buy for Africa and it will work just fine. Topped with a Zeiss Conquest 2x10 and Zeiss Terra Ed binos. Let the debate begin!

Great Combination! You gonna love hunting in South Africa with that setup. What bullets will you be shooting?
