Welcome to South Africa…

The last time my friend went to Israel, they allowed him to conceal carry, since he had the permit back home. Maybe if Africa would extend the same courtesy, the robbers would think twice?

Moral of the story, don’t blindly follow google maps, end up in Nyanga and get shot.

Buy a local map book, confirm the route on your GPS or google maps is the same, as a main route on the map, and then drive. Thousands of people end up in terrible places all over the world because of relying on google maps alone.
And pls dont stop in Nyanga to draw cash from yhe atm....ffs....

They'll have to pick up your hat and take it to the funeral if you do....

It's been a quarter century since I first visited South Africa. My subsequent visits have shown a steady deterioration in infra-structure and a more dangerous environment. But it has not deteriorated as fast as, say San Francisco. At least, not in general. Each time we have a similar thread someone chimes in to say "that could happen anywhere". Ya, obviously. But such statements are not sufficient reasons to ignore travel warnings. One can make the same trite statements comparing wing-suit flying to commercial air travel, or walking to the mail box and climbing K2. Meaningless. I will not drive in South Africa unaccompanied any longer. But I would like to visit again.............thanks for OP posting.............FWB

I'm not familiar with RSA carry laws but I have noticed several of the locals carrying a concealed weapon, 9MM autos, on my last 2 trips to RSllOn my last trip SAPS asked me if it was for hunting or protection? I said for hunting, back up for Cape Buffalo. SAPS then asked about a scope for the revolver? I said, it doesn't have one. (I had forgot to cable tie a scope to it). Realizing the short 4-1/2 inch barrel, SAPS let it go as it was on my pre-approved firearms permit through Henry Rifle Premits.

Maybe we can get a better understanding on RSA carry conceal laws from the RSA members here on AH.

or if you are stuck to your screen try and use the another google tool: GOOGLE EARTH STREET VIEW.
Perhaps this could provide a clue about a place you should perhaps avoid as a tourist.

Am I the only one wondering how the Google car made it through there with all of its kit still intact?

Due to circumstances my wife & I are staying in an area in Pretoria called Kameldrift. We are staying at a very nice, secure & safe lodge called Bushmans Rock.
We are making daily trips to an area near Joburg. We know how bad crime is in RSA, bad! Anyone that says its not, at best must have a screw loose.

When you start thinking about carrying and possibly using a concealed weapon, be sure you know what you will be getting yourself in for, it will not be nice.

If your coming to hunt listen to your PH and stay the hell away from ATM machines.
When it is dark do your absolute best to be off of the roads. Find out about electric load shedding schedules in your area.

I live in RSA, and I don't even hang around Johannesburg and Pretoria.

I was actually surprised that the entire area had been covered by Google Earth Street View. They were determined. It did cross my mind that they might have had a support vehicle.

What is your business here? Should we list every crime that occur in Germany, USA, England etc?
What is your objective with every post?

we can all find negative articles, about all countries, and post them here every day, will become pretty boring to read though

I read the OP is from Germany, living in SA for the last 40 years. He is probably trying to scare the rest away so he can enjoy SA for himself...

We do have a bit of a problem with foreigners here in SA, it is either crime or them buying up all the great properties...

He already left for Germany again. Hopefully he never sets foot on African soil again and enjoys wearing lederhosen daily…

You naive lad, I just want to tell visitors to beautiful South Africa to be more careful. Many tourists are extremely imprudent. Every visitor hurt or killed is a sad occurrence, and, quite obviously very negative for South Africa’s reputation.

BTW, the murder rate in 2022 regarding South Africa was a staggering 25,187 whereas in Germany it was a low 264. Don’t compare apples to oranges…

Be careful when you travel. There are not so nice people everywhere. If that’s the message, great.
