Weatherby moves manufacturing operation to Sheridan, Lander was in consideration

High-end rifle and shotgun manufacturer
Weatherby will be moving their headquarter and manufacturing operations to Sheridan from Paso Robles, California. The announcement will be streamed live on the company’s facebook page at 5:00 pm tonight, from the Black Tooth Brewing Company. Wyoming Governor Matt Mead will also be present.

The win is a significant one for Wyoming as it’s reported that Weatherby will be bringing 90 jobs to Sheridan. Sources shared with County 10 that Weatherby, located in California since the mid 1940’s, has been considering locating in a state with a more favorable pro-firearms industry culture and citing a frustration with California’s tax structure.

Lander was one of 4 reported locations in contention for the manufacturer’s relocation to Wyoming. The locations did not know which specific company had expressed interest, other than they knew that it was a business in the firearms industry from California. However, it was learned that a significant factor in their decision was proximity to an interstate highway. “We knew it was a significant factor, but we chose to pitch them regardless,” reported Mike Lilygren, Lander Economic Development Association (LEDA) Founding Board Member.

Ultimately, representatives from Weatherby chose not to come and visit Lander as part of the location selection process. “LEDA will continue to pursue other businesses. This is one opportunity. There’s another company out of the front range that we’re working with, but it’s probably a couple years out, ” added Lilygren.

Hurray for Weatherby!! I wonder if they are taking any of their employees with them? If not, I wonder how long it will take new "operators" to get fully up to speed? I think I've read elsewhere that some Weatherby firearms are produced by other manufacturers but I don't know if they all are.

its not easy to understand for a German, that California should be a communistic state.
We had real communistic,Russian troops in our neighbourhood over decades.

In the end this was an economic decision, not a social one. And this happens across all industries --- take good paying 20-25 dollar an hour job, move it to a region of the country where you can decrease pay to 12-15 dollars an hour, sell your product for the same money, and rake in the profits. It's good for the workers of southern US and non-coastal western states though. Your 3 employment choices were working at the gas station, working at the prison, or living at the prison.

I think Weatherby may be the exception to that though. I think they just can't quite get the market share their name should demand. They need to quit slapping their logo on other companies' guns and market themselves as a high end maker like they used to be. That or they need to start making their own proprietary entry level rifle because no one is going to pay an extra 100 dollars for a Vanguard over a Howa which is literally the same thing.

Other companies have done the same, and are fed up with these "feel good" gun laws. Berreta moved out Maryland for their restrictive gun laws. Magpull moved out of Colorado because of their magazine laws. I also read somewhere that Kimber was considering moving out of New York.
I'd say good on them!

If I were one of those southern CA workers getting paid $25 an hour at Weatherby and I moved to Wyoming with them and cut my pay to $15, I bet that in the end it would feel like a raise.

No state nor city income taxes. Wide open spaces east of town. Magnificent mountains west of town! Mule and whitetail deer, elk, turkeys, pheasants, sharptail, blue, spruce grouse, antelope, bear, moose, mountain goat, bighorn sheep and mountain lion within a couple of hours. Great country! Not that bad of weather, but I’m sure it will be a bit of an adjustment from Paso Robles.
Excellent fishing close as well.
A ways to an international airport (maybe all the way south to Denver?)
The conservative ranch community I’m sure will be an influence.

Foxi, In our youths, California was an entirely different state politically and in economics.

Problem with California is just to many people. When I was down in Dallas it was the same way. People from California are moving to Texas. It will be just like it in 10 years. Nobody wants to come to Kansas were losing people.

I saw an article that said Cali State politicians were discussing putting a state corporate income tax in place on top of the new lower 21% federal corporate rate (potentially to add up to old corporate rate of ~35%). If they do it they should call it the Corporate Headquarters Extirpation Act.

Look at all the manufacturers that have moved to SOuth Dakota. Weatherby was considering moving to Missoula, Mt in the late 90’s but decided to stay put. There are several states that have serious pro gun/pro business attitudes and tax rates. MT, WY, SD and TX all open their arms to the firearms industry. Kimber already has their warranty people in MT. You still ship guns to Yonkers NY but all the RMA’s are issued from MT. I’d like to see all these anti gun states realize the lost revenue!
