We never should have went hunting in Africa

At DSC convention I was seeing multiple 5+ species 7 day hunts for about $3,500. Add the plane fare still less than $6K.

But those hunts are usually a "special price" for the convention. On my hunt it was for 6 animals and 2 culls for $6000

Now after the hunt you need to figure in the cost of getting the trophies home and the taxidermy work $$$$ to add either over in Africa or back here in the US

Let's stop splitting hairs, because this isn't what it's all about.
I started this thread because going to Africa got me hooked on it...that's what I was trying to share.
Others seem to agree, and if you don't that's OK.
If you wish to debate US hunting vs hunting abroad, feel free to start another thread.

To be honest taxidermy costs are a wash regardless where you are. A cougar mount costs the same as a Leopard mount. Yes, dip n pack and shipping costs are another cost though.

It would be nice to be in a position where a person could make multiple trips over to Africa to hunt like a lot of the members on this site do.

However for the vast majority of hunters it is a one time thing and we just have to sit here and hope that we can draw a tag for a North American animal each year for a DIY hunt.

Well, you are on "Africa Hunting" forum. If you are resentful of those that can afford African hunting more than once maybe this is the wrong forum for you.

BeeMaa, my apologies for getting off topic of your OP, in support of your comment I quoted:

Reality costs comparison can be made and argued forever. As well as taxidermy and taxidermists. NA vs SA big game is NO COMPARISON.

Ok, Texas ranchers have relocated "exotic" animals for their monetary benefit, and subsistence (NO OFFENSE INTENDED OR MEANT TO THOSE OPERATORS AND OPERATIONS),.......BUT IT DOES NOT COMPARE TO THE AFRICAN, EUROPEAN, (WHEREVER) EXPERIENCE. Just like a North American elk, prong horn, etc. hunt in Africa could not compare to an actual North American hunt experience!!.

If it's not for the experience, adventure, the memories, the hunting of an animal "exotic" to one's local; then why does anyone of us need to spend $100's or $1000's of dollars to do what we like.....to do....hunt?

If you're into advertising:
(No Offense to the Sponsors, Outfitters, Lodges, PH's, or Other Agents and Agencies),

But when comparing costs of a North American elk hunt to a big game hunt in Africa; Compare the elk hunt to African animal hunts to include what it will costs to hunt not only in South Africa, but include the costs and types of hunts offered to perspective clients to hunt in other countries: ie. Tanzania, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, etc.

Just saying let's keep our Pro and/or Con threads/posts on topic of the OP, PLEASE.

Mrs BeeMaa is just about to pull out a fresh batch of rusk out of the oven.
Rusk are those dried biscuits that are in just about every camp and we fell in love with them.
The whole house smells cake right now and my mouth is watering.
I did marry an incredible baker.

:Joyful:....Does the Mrs BeeMaa have a sister?....:E Rofl:

Must be: single, over 35, good cook, and most importantly doesn't mind a guy that hunts and likes traveling. :E Rofl:all else is negotiable....:E Rofl:

Aaaahhh.....Tanks...Please be respectful..... I'm (single and) retired the same as many others on AH......Not All Forum members (can), for one reason or another)...are not able to make annual trips to Africa or anywhere else....some (especially youngsters) have set priorities in life......before annual foreign travels to hunt....

JimP,

As long as you support hunting and shooting sports and don't become a"troll" for the "anti's" and unless Brickburn or other enablers say otherwise....I welcome you to stay and contribute on this forum

Yeaaah.....Think about it......JimP....
You set aside funds for a hunt you didn't get drawed for.....next year same thing.

Your Choice.....take a chance and hope you get drawed the third year .....or use those same funds for another SA hunt,.....maybe a moose, bear, caribou hunt...or maybe...keep saving for something more important to you/your future.....

the first time I had rusk, I said we have that in the usa, its called stale bread. several spilled their coffee laughing. I have a friend who married a African girl and that's how I got started on my first of six trips, the cost goes way down going to private farms to hunt with friends. we were over last june for 11 days and had a good time. my house keeper, baboon chaser and friends.

Single, over 35 and...who the hell am I kidding...this ain't Eharmony. ;)

She's a terrible cook anyway.
I wouldn't give her food to people I don't like.

Cheers mate.

My wife and I have been on only one safari to RSA for PG in June 2019.
We are currently planning another for 2022 for a PG/DG with the same outfitter.

Over the past several months we have been looking into other places to hunt and fish.
Alaska fishing and Brown Bear hunting.
Canada for Brown/Black Bear, Moose along with fishing.
Western US for Elk/Black Tail/Grizzly Bear/Sheep.
Etc, etc, etc...

Thing is we are coming to the realization that we have been completely spoiled.
Every hunting adventure will be compared to Africa.
The thought of hiking 10 miles through rain and cold to possibly SEE a sheep but not actually shoot one...
Being dropped off in a Deer blind and sitting there all day to MAYBE see a shooter...

No, no, no...We're thinking of driving in the bakkie until we see something and putting a stalk on.
We know not all of them will work out, but if the PH sees a really good Impala....we might have a new rug.
Almost all the animals are on the menu if your checkbook is willing.
The weather isn't usually bad and if it is, it doesn't last too long.
Then the plan will be adjusted and we can watch animals in the rain...FROM THE LODGE!

Don't get me wrong, we will go hunting and fishing other places.
We're just not sure how they will compare.
Especially for the price, how we were treated and how much we loved everything about it.

The point is we never should have went hunting in Africa, because it has spoiled us for everything else.
We know we can't be the only ones thinking this.
Anyone else feel the same or have a rebuttal?

That is so good to hear!! Very stoked that the Africa bug has bitten!!

Hunting in Africa is a disease I don’t want to be cured of. Trip #4 coming in May 2020. Can’t wait!
I know what you mean. I made my first safari in '83 when I was in my twenties and never got over it. Then came baby, unstable economy, houses, inflexible jobs, etc. I never could swing it. Now I'm going back in 2021 with the same PH. I told him if we had to wait another 38 years we might be a little too old at about 105. So I'm still not over it, and don't want to be.

I feel exactly the same way!

Imagine growing up here; truly spoilt.
Now that I'm older I can actually understand going hunting and not coming home with the "bacon" so to speak.
Looking forward to a hunt in AUS one day. Planning has started.

I'm going to do a local trophy hunt or two this year (paying more than the meat price) just to support some of the operators.

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?

Do you have any cull hunts available? 7 days, daily rate plus per animal price?
