Wave Hunting, Surfing, Beaches

Sorry I did not follow the names. And back then actually didn’t know there was such a thing as world famous surfers.
The late 70s very early 80s was when what we think of as pro Surfing came of age. There was a pro Surfing scean in the early 60s but it was tiny and relegated mostly to coastal areas. In the late 70s bigger money got involved and it became a little more mainstream also the equipment was changing. The twin fins and tri fin thrusters where putting surfers on different places on the wave and allowing for more radical maneuvers.

Very nice work. Do you have pics of the stages of the build ?

The second photo could be a shop in Hawaii

the first photo does not look like big wave country

Wow, how many hours is in the board
People ask me that all the time. Surfboard construction works mostly as a lot of sometimes little steps over the course of days weeks or even sometimes months. If I shoot a hot coat on one side well that took about 2 or 3 minutes to lay down and now maybe I'm done for the day then flip it over and do the other side, ok done for the day again. so there's two days right there. So a board might take weeks to make but it's a lot of little steps. Except the shaping and sanding and polishing, there you might have some hours into the process but I don't keep track of that stuff cause maybe I sand one area to put artwork and or if I'm sanding the entire board getting it ready for a gloss coat or pinstripes or whatever

So how many would you make in a year..are they orders mostly or for stock?....and what's the price range?....sounds like takes a while to make one
Again it all depends, I'm small time due to what I build. I do 10-15 boards every 3-6 months surfboards usually cost between 600-1500$ depending on size material choice and color work. My board's are sometimes are way more 2k - 3k$ sometimes, but I build really intricate over the top stuff. I'm like the Holland and Holland of surfboards to make a analogy

There is a huge amount of work and skill in making a board

There really is little money in it

I've made 5 in my life - none very good

By the time I've bought the clark foam blank, fibreglass material, fibreglass resin etc

Then spent 20 hours shaping. glassing and finishing

Fitted fins and leash plugs and supplied fins

There is little money to be made

Add artwork to that bill and a custom board struggles to compete with the chink crap made by computer

Oh also lets not forget the shaping room, tressels, low lights and fume extraction !!

This is a rather true statement. The cost of the material has become astronomical. Like over the top high. Which is why surfboard prices seem to be expensive for the idea of what you are getting, a water toy. This is why I build what I build and why I go after the serious connoisseur or art collector who are willing to pay a little extra for a extraordinary surfboard. There's a part of me though that really doesn't care about the money I do it cause I love it, I was extremely fortunate to be born in a time and place and corner of the world and to be excepted into this elite fraternity of true wild characters adventures and craftsman and have this be my culture and what we bring to the to the world
