Wanting a high accuracy 308 bolt action rifle what to get?

Not in a 308.
IMHO, Shooting groups for precision It's more conducive with a rifle that has a little weight. He does not want to run a break, so all you can do is add weight. Can it be done, Yes. It requires more effort to your part.

Sako's from what I can find in searching are closer to the $2000 price range. Wanting to keep rifle cost below 1500 if possible.

Then look at its less expensive brother, the Tikka T3x. Stock is available in wood or plastic.

I have several rifles that would check all those boxes, but none of them are better for the money than the Tikka T3. Tikka, Bergara, Howa, Rem 700 R5, Daniel Defense Delta 5 are all options that will be able to do what you describe.

It's tough to find a bad shooting 308. It's an inherently accurate caliber and everybody makes a rifle chambered in it. There have been a several recommendations I would echo: Savage 110, Tikka T3, Weatherby Vanguard/Howa 1500 (same rifle). In all probability the individual rifle will be the deciding factor. Any of the brands/models mention will shoot sub MOA with the right ammo.

Of the three you listed above I'd probably take the Tikka, then the Howa and then the Bergara in that order. I have experience with Tikka and Howa and no complaints. I've never owned or shot a Bergara.

Hard to go wrong with a rifle that carries a accuracy guarantee of sub MOA right out of the box.

It is the Weatherby Vanguard.

I know that mine in 25-06 was exceptional right out of the box with factory amo.

I am looking for a bolt action rifle in 308 capable of .75 moa or better 5 shot groups with a match round it likes. Any thoughts?
Besides the accuracy here are some features/qualities I am wanting. A smooth action feel with great reliability. Both CRF and push feed are fine don't care either way. Barrel length 20"- 24". 1 in 11.25" or faster twist. Great factory trigger or ability to replace with great aftermarket trigger. A stiff strong strait comb stock preferred (do not like some of the flimsy polymer stocks). NO muzzle brakes.

Appreciate any advice to steer me in the right direction. Thanks.
T3 tikka

About to go with the Bergara the others are not available anywhere as far as I can find......
You will not be disappointed. Bergara made precision barrels for custom rifles for along time.

Someone finally got them to start making some barreled actions. All made in Spain. They basically took over the R700 market share imo. Just a nice middle range rifle that is Sub Moa with 90% of factory ammo.

One of the better factory triggers. Happy hunting.

I have spent many hours behind an FN SPR as a swat sniper, but I’d say that’s an unnecessary purchase. The draw to the FN is that they found a way to chrome line a match grade barrel, which came with a 10,000 round .5 MOA guarantee. They will do that, but they are stupid heavy and the factory trigger is dreadful. The Bergara suggestions are spot on. .75 moa isn’t much to ask of a modern rifle. The key is finding one that will do it consistently at swinging temps. The bergara b-14 ridge is a very affordable option that is heavy enough to deal with barrel heat, but light enough to hunt. The premier series rifles are a real bargain for premium hunting rifles as well.

I have a couple SAKO’s - I pronounce them “Sako”. They are great! I Found a nice Finnbear in your price range on consignment at Scheels. It was fired, but never hunted and in new condition. I also have a Tikka T3 that has a new stock and trigger that is a nail driver. I like Browning A-Bolt too… I’ve dispatched a lot of animals with a SS A-Bolt Stalker (7MM RM) but there are lots of choices for $1,500.

Good luck!

Is there Velcro on the stock below the chamber? If so, what for? (I feel like I should know this, but I don’t)

It's for a Short Action Precision, 2 round holder.
The Tikka only holds 3 down & i prefer not to carry with a loaded chamber until i know i have the chance to take a shot. 2 extra, really close on hand, gives me the warm fuzzies when I'm elk hunting.

Savage. Model 10/12, or get a Savage LRP in 6.5 Creedmoor and a couple cases of Prime ammo and you should be GOLDEN and within max budget!!!

I have no experience with the Tikkas, but some of them are possible candidates as well. If you aren't set on the 308 for a specific reason, a 6.5 caliber has much better ballistics.

If this is a 'precision' rifle for range use, my vote would be a Tikka T3x Tac A1. I had one in 6.5 and it was a spectacular rifle out to 1200yds. Super heavy, but modular, well built and with an excellent trigger.

A Rem 700 can be an extremely accurate rifle, but they're projects. You buy it, you blueprint it, you swap the trigger, you replace the stock, pillar bed it, swap the extractor and get a new barrel... then it's fantastic. Off the shelf...eh.
