Wanted 450/400 NE Double Rifle

Yes, I haven't made up my mind yet. The only thing I use a red dot for is turkey hunting and bullseye pistol matches. I talked to George at Champlin again about it. He said the cost to mill the rib and add the mount and Trijicon red dot is about $1250. In my opinion, the fun on DG is getting close. My elephant was about 15 yards. I would hope to use this double at 40 yards or less. With this flip over night sight, I may not get a red dot at all for it.

I looked at one just like it at DSC. Very nice looking rifle. George is top in the business. I've been seeing ammo on GB going for $300 per box!

Yes. Most likely! I just bought a set of dies for my 450/400, which is a Ruger No1. But I do have 5 boxes of Hornady factory loads on hand as well. If I were to buy another double, I think 450/400 is the direction I'd go. Did George have your rifle in stock, or do you have to wait awhile?

I was told by an importer of doubles here that 450/400 is now the most common double brought in. But virtually no ammo for them, so the manufacturers need to wake up to the new demand of this cartridge.

I was informed the other day that a shipment of Hornady ammunition just arrived in RSA. They do have .404J, but did not ask about .450-.400. If they do have be sure to clarify Bonded or un-Bonded. I almost made a mistake recently on some Hornady.

Hi Lon, so far I have secured 46 rounds of Harnady DGX unbonded (range fodder), 20 new brass, 150 DGX bonded heads and 100 DGS that don't say bonded but I don't think they need to be. Then I have secured and paid for 60 450/400 brass and 40 375 flanged mag out of that Hornady container. It is in Jhb, they are just unpacking and logging in. That should be enough to bruise my shoulder really well. This foray wasn't easy, ear to the ground, following leads, ten's of phone calls and a few there and then uber trips.

This rifle had just been listed by George that day. He did say that he had more coming.

I went back and forth a lot between 450/400 and 470. George and Craig Boddington both recommended a 450/400 for a first Nitro express double. I don’t know if I will do any more elephants but even if I do, this cartridge is more than acceptable.
