Hello to my reloading and hunting brothers.
I am in need of a handful of 300 gr. Premium solids for my Ackley. Leaving for a trip next month and have searched Swift and Woodleigh distributors to no avail. Have .375 factory loads but was hoping to utilize the full potential of the Ackley on an elephant. Rifle shoots BTS beautifully and SAF’s as well. Guess I could pull some from factory loaded rounds. Just hoping someone might have a few they will part with. Shoot straight and often—AJ

I'll look but I may have some 300 grain woodleigh bullets. I may also have some Barnes 300 grain bullets if you are interested. The only problem I know for sure is if you are going to Zimbabwe to hunt El the Barnes "solids" are really hollow points. My ammo wasn't checked upon entry into Zimbabwe but it was out existing. I got some very uncomfortable looks and a very stern warning that hollow points bullets are not allowed in the country.

I have most of a box of the old Barnes banded solids (300gn) but I am guessing you are in the US while I am in the UK.

Hey RR, thanks !! A few of the Woodleighs would be great and yes I am going to Zimbabwe. Was there last year and lost a bull with a .416 but I won’t dwell on that.

How do you come to that conclusion?

Reloading International shows some 300 gr North Fork FP solids in stock... these are excellent bullets if you want a FP solid copper monolithic penetrating bullet.

This happened to me in 2021 up on leaving Zimbabwe. It's not a conclusion.

It was the customs officers' statements to me. The shock on their faces that my ammo wasn't checked by them upon entry, as it was the same customs officers that checked me into the country.

Since I was leaving when my "illegal ammo" was discovered; narrative of their, the 2 officers side of the conversation: "...you are heading to South Africa...your...'bullets/this ammo' won't be confiscated....(first officer) just it's not allowed.../(second officer)...not allowed to use hollow point bullets.....(first officer said, please; second officer didn't say please) ....don't bring this type of ammo back....".

I made multiple apologies. Even told them that Barnes bullet company considers these are solids.

It was a little tense the first couple of minutes, but things softened as we conversed. Eventually I was forgiven and allowed to leave with all my ammo.

The thing is they were the same customs officers that checked me in and helped me with my visa, only later to find the paperwork on a third officer's desk, and had been completed prior to my arrival.

In the end, with exception to this little hiccup, entry and exit into Zimbabwe was courteous and friendly.

NOTE: ( Their words paraphrased) THE ONLY REASON (these officers) were inspecting my ammo on exit; as a courtesy to insure that I wouldn't have any complications with SAPS on re-entry into South Africa.

The excess ammo count was corrected on my copy of SAPS Forms. Using Henry Rifle Permits, I again made it through SAPS without any further problems.

I remember this happening to @Ridge Runner. I remember some members saying they were probably looking for a bribe. IvW would appreciate your advice on how you would handle this given I am also taking Barnes TSX to Zimbabwe next month

Thanks!

Thanks much. I have used NF bullets before; soft pts on a Lion and they worked well. I’ll check out their inventory.

Rare Breed,

Thanks for remembering, as I was sure I had mentioned this experience a couple of times.

And I think I may have also mentioned, "...Zimbabwe is not South Africa...". The 2 officers I was envolved with were friendly and polite, even through this "hiccup". These 2 officers not directed, but in a read between the lines sorta way, offering them or any other custom officer a bribe is a quick way of getting into a lot of legal trouble.

Here's what happened:

Knowing ahead of time how much the visa was going to cost me in USD, I had that amount in one pocket, (misc travel amount in a separate pocket; tip(s) at airport in a third pocket, and the rest of my travel money split between a pocket in my safari jacket and camera case, So Not To Show A Lot Of Cash). During our conversation on the way into Zimbabwe, I pulled the money out to pay for the Visa in anticipation, before they asked; for a very brief moment, (being a first timer they afforded me a lot of leeway since we had been having such a good conversation), that the money I had pulled out was for a bribe. By the look on their faces, I very quickly, and to their relief, I said this is for the Visa. That's when in a conventional way said, "...this is Zimbabwe not South Africa...".

I have a box of Woodleigh 300 gr. solids that are excess to my needs. Yours for $50 and I'll pay the postage. PM if interested.

I just got 3 boxes of Hornady DGS 300's in the mail. They were easy to find, unlike lots of other stuff right now.

I think he means the Triple Shock, not the Barnes solid.
I'll check to see if the bullets are the triple shock. But even questioned myself as to how Barnes listed these as solids when they have a hollow point. I'll do a separate thread and post photos of the box and bullets.

I have never seen Triple Shocks called solids before so I dont know. They are in a sense a solid as there is no jacket or core, and they do have an open tip...

I have a small amount of north fork flat point solids 300 gr. For $1.50 each and I’ll cover the send !

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.
